I'm interested in suggestions for a DVD title that makes effective use of
Dolby Digital 5.1 please. Not necessarily sci-fi / special effects type of
thing, more general surround sound (street scenes, conversation in bar
rooms, that type of everyday thing).

In my (somewhat limited) experience, rear speakers sometimes only seem to be
used very occasionally, for a specific effect or two.

Heat
Matrix
Desperado
Gladiator - arrows, crowds, tigers, chariots
Unbreakable - crowd scenes
X-men (good effect when Xavier is doing his telepathy)
Lost in Space (Spiders!)
From Dusk Till Dawn (Vampire Bats!)
Independence Day (opening titles)

Why not get a DD5.1 sampler disk (DVD Platinum) ?

Very many thanks for your suggestions.

Not sure that that would make a good night in with the fiancee :-)

ah Chick flick!

Bridget Jones is pretty good and out in the next few days.

Notting Hill
Four Weddings
Chasing Amy
Hi Fidelity is also an excellent film all with top DD5.1 sound.

If you want to give your REARS a good test, you must listen to U-571. It's
the Best I've heard for hammering the Rears.

Best I've heard for realistic background noise are Fight Club and the
remixed edition of Seven.

Even better rear-action than "Anal Adventures 4" ?

Seriously, U571, while being an iffy film, is a must-have for the sound.
Just make sure the neighbours are out when you put it on.

I think I must have seen Hi Fidelity 4 or 5 times already, but if it's a
good DVD title then it can bear watching again...!

In case anyone is interested I just picked up U-571 for 9.99 in
Woolworths. Haven't tried the sound yet though.

Ask the neighbours to move out before you pump the volume up to 11.
