Which is the best?
My requirements are: 28inch, Stereo sound (not Pro Logic as I have a
seperate amp for that), well that's about all the requirements really.
TIA.

I have a Sony KV-32WF1U (my fourth Sony in 10 years - because their great
not because they break down) and am very happy with it. If your a stickler
for quality then a Trinitron is a must and these days the price difference
is very little. Mine was £950.
BTW the 28" version is KV-28WF1U but go for the 32 if you can afford/fit it
in your room.

You can get a Sony KV-28WF1 from the Discount TV & Video Store at
http://www.barclaysquare.com
for £549.99 including delivery. Mine arrived this morning!
First impressions are good, but my terrestrial reception must be poor
because the picture is grainy on all channels. Time to go digital? Also,
vertical lines seem to bend slightly towards the right in the top 2-3" of
the screen.
Dean, have you found a way to make AV2 default to S-Video instead of
composite video? When I play a video, the TV switches to AV2 instead of YC2,
giving a B&W picture, so I must manually switch over to YC2. My 6 year old
Panasonic TV had a switch on the back to make AV2 default to S-Video input,
so I'm sure there must be an option in the menus somewhere, but I haven't
found it and the menu doesn't seem to mention it.
Thanks!

This problem seems to be in all Sony's I have seen. Sorry to say, there is
no solution. It will always auto jump to AV2 not YC2 and you have to manually
overide it. I cut the pin on my scart lead from my SVHS recorder so it
wouldn't switch channels at all.

P.S Is even the FD1 better?
I'm not a 100% on this but I've heard that this a macrovision problem as I
have it on DVD's, however I've also heard its something to do with the S-VHS
input. Something along the lines of the signal being split at source (i.e.
DVD player) and being resplit in the TV. I must say I am a little confused
on the last point but I think it may be on the right lines.

I haven't had a problem with this. I always disable the autoswitching in
scart and assign channel buttons to the AV inputs (8 for DVD, 9 for SVHS
etc) and just select manually but at least I don't have to toggle through
all the av inputs.

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I should have gone for one of the Panasonic
widescreens, but I never even considered that the Sony would not behave
properly, given that my old TV can manage it. Maybe the fact that Panasonic
make S-VHS VCR's and Sony don't has something to do with it.
I have been used to my TV switching to S-Video input when I play a video
(and back to TV picture when I press stop) for 6 years, so I will miss this
feature badly!

To be honest I would find this very annoying. I have an AV setup and
frequently set 2 S-VHS decks recording from each other. If they auto changed
channels every time I hit play on one of them that would be very irritating.

The FD1 enables any AV input that supports it to default to S-Video.
In my case, AV2 becomes YC2 (input from LDP).

Macrovision wouldn't cause the grainy terrestrial reception.
Apparently, Sonys are renowned for having insensitive tuners.
The bend at the top could be Macrovision if it's coming off DVD or
Macrovision-protected tape, but it could also be a worn tape (or
heads).

Ah I thought I was the only one with the bendy problem at the top of
my Sony TV on DVD's - I never thought it could be the Macrovision on
the DVD's (which is the only format I have seen it on so far).
I wonder if it happens on Sky Box Office as they use Macrovision to
protect the films from being copied so it may happen on that as well.
At first I thought it might have been an incompatibility between my
DVD player and my widescreen TV, but when I changed from my Tosh DVD
player to my Sony one - the problem was still there.
Can anybody recomend a good box to defeat Macrovision ???
