Any general advice on running hi-fi cables? Aside from the obvious "don't
wrap everything around the mains". I'm looking to ways of boxing them in
and now would be a good time to decide the runs.

I used some 1" x 3/4 " batton and attatched my skirting board to it with
screws (using taurus skirt under the overhang so you cannot see them) then
you can run all the cable behing the skirt and out through walls without
being able to tell , (do use screws as you will need to get behind it again
as things change)

aslso the white sticky backed conduit from b&q is very handy for going up
the wall, if you want it nicer then you would have to build in some corner
units or something, the better your diy the more options you can have.
(or get a load of that flat stuff and run it round the carpet)

as for splitting signals, just as you say seperate the power from the audio
wherever possible and use heavily sheilded cables for long runs next to
other items. also run extra cables just in case
(I did not know what my cable supplier would need for broadband so I
installed a rj45 and a crossover just in case they change it at a later
date) I also have the cables ready for a 7.1 setup if and when I get a
capable amp)

Replace the skirting with some with wire channels in the back.
