Need to make a subwoofer choice, PDR10 or PS1000 (paradigm)

Hi

I ordered the Paradigm PDR12 sub from Richer Sounds yesterday, for £180.

Well, surprise surprise, they are out of stock (they say the PDR12 is
discontinued?) but they do have the smaller PDR10 (£150) or the oafish
PS1000 (£200).

After reading a few reviews, my thoughts were to avoid the PS range, as
apparently they lack the definition of the PDR range, even if they have more
oomph. The boxes have different designs - the PS subs are, I am told, a
closed design and therefore boomy (yes I'm getting the jargon wrong, but you
experts know what I'm trying to say!)

The sub is to go with 4 hifi speakers (Wharfedale Program 50's and little
JPWs), Mission centre, Sony STRDB930 amp in a living room 17' X 15'. Mainly
for home cinema use, especially action films but I don't want to sacrifice
quality for raw power.

Has anyone here tried both the PDR and PS ranges?

I need to let Richer Sounds know tomorrow whether it's one, the other or
neither sub which I'm going for. I'm thinking that the PDR10 would be ample,
seeing as I do have neighbours! I was looking at the PS1200 and then I
figured out how big that mother is. The PS1000 is only slightly smaller.

I can always get a second PDR10 later on, if one isn't enough, I suppose..
but 1 good sub is going to be a better bet than 2 not so good subs, as 1
good one will reach lower freqs.

Any thoughts?! Help! :)

TIA

Won't RS let you buy both, have a good listen, then take the "loser" back ?

I've got the PS1000, sorry haven't heard the PDR10 but when I was
initially reading up about it everyone recommended paying the extra 50
quid for the 1000. So glad I followed their advice.

Yes it is big, yes it can be boomy if its not setup properly or
positioned correctly, but so can most subwoofers I believe.

Mine is currently placed against a side wall which seems to give me
the best sound due to my furniture arrangement. In this position (Ive
moved it around a lot and fiddled with the dials like mad over the few
months Ive had it) it is not boomy at all.

The thing I like most about it, is its way more powerful than I need,
so its only half way up volume wise, which IMHO gives much more subtle
bass but can still KICK IT when needed.

The PS-1000 was an excellent sub when it was selling for £350. For £200 it's
a steal, almost certainly the cheapest 'worthwhile' subwoofer on the market.

These subs are *not* fundamentally boomy. What they are is somewhat more
position sensitive than other subs due to the sideways firing ported design.

Under ideal circumstances you should audition before buying, and I'd imagine
Richer should be okay with this. Either way, the PS-1000 is a far more
substantial and worthwhile design than the PDR-10.
