My aging but otherwise excellent Marantz laserdisk player was just
killed by my daughter which means I need to start looking for a
replacement. Given the growing support for dvd I'd probably be stupid
to just upgrade to another pure laserdisk player. Not having followed
the AV mags for a while I don't know where to go next but I believe I
heard that Pioneer had a combination player. So some questions if you
can:
1) Do they
2) Is it any good
3) Are there others that do both dvd and laser disk
4) Do any of them also do photo cd's (I'd love to make some room on my
hifi stand
5) How well do they play audio cd's (the Marantz was jumpy although
sound was superb)
6) Do any of them allow a link to pc for use as dvdrom drives (just a
thought:-))
7) Are any region free/hackable (not a priority if dvd takes off as it
should in region 2)
Although I've picked up a few names of uk distributors of disks while
following these groups and the list I'd also appreciate a few comments
on mail order and other hardware suppliers and recommendations if
poss. UK only for now Southwest shops would help.
TIA
PS anyone got £600?

.......but I believe I heard that Pioneer had a combination player. So some

can:
1) Do they
Yes, DVL-909
2) Is it any good
Apparantly yes
3) Are there others that do both dvd and laser disk
Not that I know of
4) Do any of them also do photo cd's (I'd love to make some room on my
hifi stand
Don't think so but don't quote me on that!
5) How well do they play audio cd's (the Marantz was jumpy although

Pionner has a 20 bit 96Khz DAC which although not as good as it could be (24
bit/96Khz would be
ideal) it's still a very capable CD player. It has Pioneers Legato Link
technology I believe which is
supposed to make it sound more analoguey (for want of a better word!)
6) Do any of them allow a link to pc for use as dvdrom drives (just a
thought:-))
Don't think so

You can get a region free DVL-909 from D&D DVD, Dave advertises a lot on
this group and the alt.video.dvd group as well, his e-mail address is
DAV...@AOL.COM I think, his prices seem very good. I believe the DVL-909 is
also PAL/NTSC compatible which not all machines are which is important if
you want to play US region 1 discs on it. It is code free via the remote so
no bodge job has been done on it. For other region free players check out
www.codefreedvd.com.

Wouldn't recommend a shop to be honest, they charge over the odds! Expect to
pay over a grand for the DVL-909 in a shop, you could save 2 or 3 hundred
quid by checking out Dave like I said..
By the way I am in no way associated with Dave who advertises on this group,
just he seems an honest enough bloke and his prices are good so thought I'd
point you in his direction...
TIA
PS anyone got Ł600?
I WISH!!
Do consider the alternative:
Buy the absolutely excellent Pioneer CLD D925 for between 430 & 450
quid. Plus buy a region one DVD (Panasonic A110 for as low as $320,
which would work out at about 350 quid). So for under 800 quid you
have probably the best of both plus flexibility. Alterantively,
you can put a Creative Labs encore in your PC for around £200.
Well I haven't got a DVD player (apart from an encore at work)
but I would be very reluctant to trade in my CLD D925 for a
possibly inferior compromise machine.
Cheers
