Having just got a Dreamcast (and a RGB SCART cable) I am rather annoyed to
see that my Panasonic TX-W28R4 automatically switches into widescreen mode,
with no way to force 4:3 - just the same as my Playstation. After reading
through the previous posts on this subject it seems there is no way to
overide this auto-switching. However, since pin 8 controls the ratio
sensing, if I forced pin 8 high (12V) with an outside voltage source, would
this prevent the switching? Or has anyone come across another way to achieve
the same thing? TIA

I'd just disconnect this pin on the SCART lead.

If you put a 12v source on to the pin, you've no idea of what it's going to
do. Yes, it will force it to 12v, but other circuitry will be fighting with
it. Not a good idea.

The Sega Saturn did exactly the same thing. Bunch of Sega arse. They
should stick to software.

Can't you just select 'Full' or 'Just' on the Aspect mode of the TV?

The problem is (and it does it with my Playstation), that it just stretches
the picture sideways so it looks daft.

A few games appear to be in widescreen anyway because programmers are lazy
and they think it's cool not to use the full height of the screen and save
on CPU time. However, the picture should then be zoomed in normally, thus
retaining the shape of what's onscreen.

That said, I tend to play most PSX games in Super Zoom mode on my Philips WS
telly, which is like taking a 14:9-ratio picture and stretching that to
fill the screen, so the distortion isn't quite as extreme.

I've got the Panny 28R3DP and I've found by trial and error (error mostly <g>)
that the AV2 input is switchable SVideo/RGB. I don't have the manual so I
don't know if this is documented.

My PSX (on AV1) also switches to WIDE automatically but I think that this
must be intentional since the aspect doesn't look messed up - the Sony
logo is the same aspect as on my 4:3 set and there is more black to the left
and right of the picture. I guess it's down to the games to then make
use of the extra width or not?

I've got the DVD on AV2 because when I put Pleasantville into the player
there was much zigzagging of the picture on the menu screen - it looked
*awful*. Switching to SVideo solved the problem.

I've not had a problem with RGB input on any other discs in my collection
but I've only had the set since yesterday so haven't had time to put the
lot through, just the usual suspects. I don't know how I've done without
a widescreen telly for so long!

Can anyone confirm my suspicions re the inputs?

AV2 SCART RGB/SVideo/Composite
AV3 Front Panel SVideo/Composite
AV4 SCART RGB/Composite

I have a Panasonic 32PF10 which has 3 scarts but the manual says only AV1 is
RGB.

When I connect my Sony DVD player to any of the inputs I get a colour
picture when I set the Sony to RGB. Only on AV1 does "RGB" come up on the
screen. The other inputs are showing composite video which is still being
output by the Sony. This is so you can read all the menus and at least get a
picture!

My OnDigital box outputs RGB but composite as well, which is what the video
recorder uses.

I'm not sure this is the case because if I switch the output to composite
then I don't get the zigzagginess on Pleasantville menu.

I've also got Widescreen SCART switching working now <hooray> with the dvd
which is set now to output SVideo. For the PSX I think it was switching
WIDE in any setting (have to double check that now) but for the DVD it
only does it in Panasonic AUTO mode. As I say, I'll have to double check
that - it could just be coincidental that I was in Panasonic Auto mode
when I plugged the PSX in.

And when it's showing WIDE, I can switch to any other ratio simply by
pressing the aspect button and it will cycle through 4:3, Auto (WIDE),
Full and Just.

I have a feeling you are right. This leaves me with another problem -
how do I tell whether I am getting RGB or Composite? I've not seen RGB
appear ever, despite having plugged the player into the AV1 socket.

My TV is a Panasonic TX-W28R3DP

I can't see any discernible difference between the Composite setting or
RGB setting whereas the SVideo is noticably better which leads me to believe
RGB isn't working (grr). I've downloaded the PDF version of the manual
for the TX-W28R3 but it's poorly scanned unfortunately and quite hard to
make out.

I have another problem. I've got a noticable bleed of the red component when
it is particulary strong eg Pleasantville and Blade titles.

In composite it can cause zigzag effects. In SVideo this doesn't happen but
you still get the bleed.

I ventured into the service menu (thank you deja :) and noted all the settings
before playing. I fixed the sub-black level with the 4:3 Wizard of Oz on the
MGM logo and used Blade Runner to adjust the overscan to the exact edges of
the windowbox but could I find a red level limit? Well I tried RGB Cutoff
but that didn't do it so I left it as its original value.

If anyone can help me get the red fixed then I'd be grateful!

I had a problem with Red bleed on Blade titles. I found that my DVD output
(Pioneer 717) was set to letterbox as opposed to widescreen. Setting the
output to widescreen seemed to work wonders, and finally got to see
anamorphic as it is supposed to be seen!
