I read here a while back that plasma pixels have a half life of 5 years. If
that's true, does it mean that after 5 years of viewing, the screen is half
as bright? 5 years of viewing is a long time in total, if you only watch the
TV say 3 hrs a day! Or perhaps they fade after 5 years no matter what? Or
perhaps the 5 years thing is not actually true?

Can someone put me straight please.

Considering whether to fantasize about a Sony 50" RPTV or a 50" plasma. If
it's a RPTV I'm going for then I might get one soon.

Cheers

Rob

Fujitsu quote a half life of 30,000 hours for their plasma's, or nearly 3.5
years of continuous viewing (they don't mention anything about fading).

Dont' plasma screen use excited gas (argon, xeon) and coloured phosphur
(just like on a CRT). If they do, then they would have a similar life to a
CRT. CRT's do fade with time e.g (image burn).

Paul.

Quite right. Thumb up bum, mind in neutral. Meant to say operating life.

But anyway, bottom line is they don't die any sooner than a CRT, but they
are pretty heavy and power-hungry and of course expensive. But they look
amazing.

Hmmph..plasma RPTV.. plasma.. RPTV.. eeny meeny

Thanks for info

Rob,

Check out www.action.com (UK based computer supplies firm) -
they have the Fujitsu HTM42 plasma for 3795 + vat. I've had one
for a few months and the picture is great.

Regards
Colin

The HTM 42 has now been discontinued. It's a great screen so if you can get
one, get one. Make sure that you can source stands or brackets for it as
Fujitsu have stopped making these as well.

I think you will find the technology is more akin to flourescent tubes.
Light output diminishes after a certain number of burning hours. It will
probably drop off exponentially.
