What can you do with a Tivo with no subscription?.
Or should that be what do you get for your sub money.
Still £99.99 at dixons.Might consider buying one but
don't really want to pay the subscription.

Don't think Dixons have stock, do they?

Comet & Currys have removed it from their inventory, and Dixons give you a
"sorry no stock" messgae at the back end of the checkout process.

I ordered one from Dixons a spell back, a week on they mailed me back to say
they'd cancelled the order due to problems with my credit card. I phoned
the CC company, and they said that Dixons had submitted the wrong exp. date
to them. A few days later I ordered again, but this time I used Currys. I
meticulously entered all the information, and used a different card for good
measure. A week on *exactly* the same thing happened.

I'm not too fissed really - I hanker for gadgets, then rarely ever use them.
My Pronto's been gathering dust for 3 or 4 months now.

No, not for the minute, thanks. I'll get round to using it one day. My
problem is getting a set of equipment I know I'm going to be keeping for the
long-term, I'll then put the effort into programming the Pronto and making
good use of it.

A high-quality VCR that will record from a timer (with nag screens).

You certainly get your money's worth for the lifetime sub. The sub
gives you the full Tivo EPG, special automatic recording features and
full channel control.

Same here. I assume you are aware that Dixons and Currys are the same

Well, they have different shipping rates etc. I figured if Dixons let me
down, I'd give Currys a go. I know it was a daft thing to do, but it's
weirdly satisfying to have had the same cruddy stunt pulled on me by both
companies.

Seeing as it was the exact same trick - and you know you didnt make an

What about Tivonet? Is that not an alternative? Dont know much about
it to be honest - and it all seems a little too hush hush and very
techy to me, but did have a browse. Not sure if the telnet is instead
of the phone subscription or to suppliment it - but suspect the
former!

Any knowledge?

I'd like to, but I didn't take a screen shot of the correct details being
entered. I can't really prove I wasn't at fault, even if I'm absolutely
certain that I wasn't. What we need is a dozen or so people who fell
victim - I'm only aware of there being three or four that I know of.

The only info that I have about Tivonet is that it enables your Tivo
to be accessed over the net and also facilitates programming
recordings from a distance, using the Tivo as a web server,
downloading the EPG data without a phone call (perfectly legal and
above board and still requires a subscription), extracting the
recorded data to a PC for dubious DVD/SVCD burning activities
(perfectly acceptable in the UK for own use and a legal right in some
European countries but frowned upon by the politically correct Tivo
community).

I haven't come across any way of bypassing the sub and getting full
functionality, but then again I haven't looked.

It needs to be a subscribed TiVo before you can install TiVonet.

There is nothing hush hush about a Turbonet (which is what you call Tivonet)
card. This is nothing but a network card for Tivo, enabling you to utilise
your current internet connection (ADSL/dial-up) to perform EPG updates as
normally would be done with the daily call.

As a side-effect of the Turbonet card, you can (because the TiVo is now
accessible using a network) 'hack' (which is again, a bit exagerated (sp?))
it to enable to have a shell prompt on its operating system. This then
enables you to install additional applications like Tivoweb (a webserver
with very nice features to control your Tivo remotely) and extract (but not
without some pain) stored videos from the Tivo to your PC. Some people say
this is a no-no, but others have no problems with that. What is considered
a taboo, is the talking on service theft, i.e. enabling to record with the
Tivo without paying for the guide-data.

> > I haven't come across any way of bypassing the sub and getting full

Forget about it. The sub is worth every single penny you pay for it.

> It needs to be a subscribed TiVo before you can install TiVonet.

Nonsense. See above for a description of the Turbonet card. Ofcourse,
having no subscription (and therefore no subscription data) makes
installation of a Turbonet card a bit pointless...

AFAIK, the new version of the Tivo software allows timer-based
recording with no subscription anyway (although, obviously, you would
miss out on the EPG stuff).

The hell with that - they had their chance to get some of my money, it
isn't going to happen again! I couldn't do anything about it for a few
days because I was away, while I was setting up my video before that
trip I discovered why I couldn't get it to record from the digital
receiver, and was able to fix it. In view of this I'm simply not going
to buy one. Don't need Tivo so much as high quality recording in
general, and for that I'd prefer to wait for cheaper DVD recorders.
Which I will _not_ buy from Dixons or Currys...

Fair enough - their trick has worked then and they know they can get
away with it again without fear of anyone reporting them! I agree with
your "not buying from them" but to be honest, that isnt going to hurt
them nearly as much as a wrap on the knuckles.
