On the back of most DVD cases you have information fields, telling you
what Reg, aspect ratio, sound format the disc is in but what does DISC
FORMAT mean?
i have seen this on a few dvds( e.g. Disc format -5, Disc format-10)
thanx for replies
It's an indication of the number of layers / sides used. The number is
the number of gigabytes available, to the nearest integer.
DVD5 is single side, single layer
DVD10 is double side, single layer (ie a 'flipper')
DVD9 is single side, dual layer (ie disc with a layer change)
DVD18 is double side, dual layer
Presumably there could also be a DVD14, which would have a dual layer
on one side and a single layer on the other, but I've never heard of
one actually being produced.

It's basically the number of GB that the disk can store. The storage
capacity is obtained by making the disk double layered and/or double
sided.
DVD-5 4.7GB single-sided, single layer
DVD-9 8.54GB single-sided, double layer
DVD-10 9.4GBB double-sided, single layer
DVD-18 17GB double-sided, double layer

IIRC...
DVD5 = single sided, single layer
DVD9 = single sided, dual layer
DVD10 = double sided, single layer
DVD18 = double sided, double layer
I'm sure someone could correct me... :-)
