I have a Philips TV with springclips for surround speakers. I've
tried some 8, and some 4-8 Ohm speakers but all I get from the
testtone is a **very** low hiss.

Philips tell me that I need their 16Ohm surrounds. Is there a way to
utilise the 8Ohms or do I have to ditch them and shell outŁŁŁ

Cheers,
Nick

Won't two 8 ohm pairs in parallel make a 16 ohm load ?

Er, no, two 8 ohms in parallel make a 4 ohm load. Two 8 ohm in series makes
a 16 ohm load.

As John says, Just connect two 8 ohm speakers in series, and you have the 16
ohm load required.
That way, no money needs to be shelled out

Good luck

Yeah, two 8 Ohms in series do make 16 Ohms but that's not the cause of the
problem.
If you only get a very low level hiss using an 8 ohms load you're going to
get even less
output when using a 16 ohm load.
