Remains to be seen.

DTS have been pretty much forced into this - effectively ruling themselves
out of major participation of one of the biggest movies of the next few
years would have been suicidal. I wouldn't be too surprised to see SDDS
announcing something similar in the next few weeks.

What remains to be seen is how much of an effect this 'extra' channel has on
moviegoers. I must admit that while the EX process made the first Phantom
Menace trailer sound 'different', I couldn't honestly say it made it sound
'better' than regular DD.

What *is* interesting is that when the system has been tested at the UCI
here, a number of complaints came from audience members at the back of the
auditorium, who were annoyed at having their ears blasted by the centre rear
channel speakers (which, obviously enough, have to be set up loud enough for
the audience near the screen to hear them).

Time will tell both how widespread its adoption eventually proves to be, and
whether the system will be officially adapted for domestic use.
