Are the price quoted in the UK amazon site without VAT ? Specifically
if you order a dvd and live in UK do they charge you with an
additional amount for VAT ?

Any reply will be appreciated !

The prices are inclusive of VAT for the UK. If you live in another member
country of the EU they adjust the rates to those valid in your country.

As I assume you are from Greece you would have to pay 4% VAT for books
(books are VAT-free (0%) in the UK) and 18% for other media (17,5% in the UK
and would only add 0,5% to the price you see on the website in your case).

I hope this helps.

Well actually there is a right to chose whether you pay VAT in the country
where the goods come from or the destination country. You must pay the VAT
at one of these points.

Amazon.co.uk has VAT identification numbers in all EU member states. They
directly pay the VAT to the destination country (only when within the EU).

For further information check their website:

They can't add 18%; they only add 0,5% because:

if you buy a non-book item you have to pay 18% VAT.
The price displayed as "Our price" already includes 17,5% UK VAT which you
don't have to pay. You only have to pay 18% Greek VAT. So they only add 0,5%
to the item's price (and postage).

For books they add 4% because books are 0% in UK and 4% in Greece.

Thanks for the helpful reply. I tried buying something and they
added 18% on top of the regular price and after postage !! I changed
my mind cause I thought it couldn't possibly be right.

Then they are not very smart: considering that they ship from a country
with zero VAT on books and one of the lowest rates for other goods
(17.5% as opposed to 19-20% in most others) they have chosen the option
that gives them more paperwork and makes them less competitive. Oh
well...
