DVD is a superior format and the threads in this
group are more akin to the discussions you get
among hi-fi nuts than people just buying films.
What I am saying is: surely the driving force for
purchasing DVD is the striving for best picture
and sound rather than just getting films as soon
as possible. Or am I wrong?

*sigh*
I think the sales will be because most people who want a film buy it in the
first couple of weeks of release anyway - so when the VHS one comes out,
those whi want it on DVD have already got it.
Those who are left may buy the video because it is cheaper.
The only videos I've bought since then have been the 2 Bob & Margaret tapes.
I was very tempted by the Planet of the Apes re-issue but held out ...
... saying that, easy access to the US catalogue, both new releases and
unvailable in the UK back catalogue, is my main reason for buying DVD. I
used to import Videos but they don't fit through my letterbox!
On the other hand, my impoverished Brother In Law normally buys Videos
rather than DVDs for the simple fact that they're cheaper, and with a 14"
TV, he don't notice the difference too much. He will however rent DVD rather
than VHS 'cos they're the same price. Basic Economics ...

I bought Lebowski on VHS a month or so before I got my DVD player, and only
got round to replacing it with the miserable featureless R2 disc because it
was only a tenner last week...

I'd have to say that I buy VHS as much as I ever have - but only in clearout
sales :) HMV and Virgin and Woolworths get me every time when they reduce
large piles of tapes to £3 or £4 each - I walk in with the cash for a single
R2 DVD and walk out with 4 or 5 tapes.

I'd have to agree. Region 1 is the main benefit of DVD, but somehow I still
end up making impulse R2 buys :( I've got around 25-30 R1 discs and about a
dozen R2 now.

Renting DVD is great, so long as you use somewhere cheap & independent. I
think I'm one of about 5 people who rent DVD from my local independent, and
I've yet to encounter a disc with greasy fingerprints on - unlike a bad
experience I had with Blockbuster.

But yes I think we all strive for picture and sound, and I will
only buy a disc if I know it excels in these departments.

Definitely
>Secondly, are the extras.
Originally these were nice but so many of them are the same format with
little interesting to say that I really couldn't care much anymore.
About the only thing worth having I think is a directors commentary

Couldn't care less, everybody gets to see something for the first time
once and I'd rather see it on a really big screen than even a big tv.

No - that's just showing off

Agreed

I would agree here.
