WH Smith's has entered the DVD market with a very limited selection.
The notable thing was the price, typically GBP 15.99 .
Much better than HMV & Virgin selling the same title across the street for
GBP 18.99.
This is getting very close to the cost of importing from America allowing
for postage and possible customs charges. And there's no waiting time.
Just need the title range and features to match the US versions.

Except they are Region 2 !

At least with Region 1 they aren`t cut.

This mostly depends on the title itself. It seems to be that the ones in
Cardboard/cheap boxes are 15.99 and the ones in the posher boxes are
18.99 or 19.99. This isn't due to the boxes themselves, but due to which
company produced them (some publishers use the cheap boxes, some use the
nice ones). I've shopped all around for DVDs in the high streets and the
prices are pretty-much all the same - the only discrepancies are shops
like "MVC" which offer 1 pound off if you're a "card-holder".

It's still considerably cheaper to buy titles from mail-order,
especially if you buy "special deals" (like both James Bond films), or
more-than-one title at a time.

Shame really. Not doing much to encourage high-street purchases. Any hi-
fi fanatic who reads a cinema/hifi magazine could find a better deal
straight away.

Cheers,

My experience is somewhat different - MVC = RRP-1, WHS = RRP; Dixons
etc. RRP+1or2, Virgin RRP+3or4

Ah, yes, of course. Sorry, but on principle I /never/ go in Dixons
(everything I have /ever/ bought from them has had things wrong with it,
and their after-sales support are not pleasant). Virgin often add the
odd quid on, which is unfortunate, as they offer the best selection
where I live (Derby).

Hmmm, sounds like the DSG aren't too good round here then. I bought my
TV from Currys down at the Wyvern a few weeks ago and it's starting to
have a few pixels burn out. Thinking about it, I've had about the same
luck as you with Currys and Dixons in Derby.

I pooped into Virgin the other day and they did seem to have a few
more disks than HMV over the road. Shame you don't know any students
because they all get 10% off at Virgin.

I know it is only a typo but the thought of someone wondering into the shop,
crouching ...... well I can think of a few shops that sell S**T but not many
that collect it!

Sounds like you haven't been in many shops in Derby then!

The security guys seemed a bit bewildered at first but I think I took
it a bit far when I jizzed on the adult collection!

Now I have to take issue with both of you here as you're implying that there
is *some* degree of customer service at Dixons when there is none.

Or buy an 8-pack of Strongbow (my local offy sells these for a fiver) and
it gives you 2quid off anything UKP 9.99 or over at Virgin. For every 9.99
you spend you can use another 2quid voucher if you collect another.

However, since Virgin are selling DVDs at 3quid more than RRP this only
benefits you if you're buying a 20quid DVD so you can get it for 16quid.

I think the strongbow offer is finish(ed|ing). I've collected a dozen or
more of the vouchers. As soon as Virgin sell something at a realistic
price I'll play my jokers :-)

None of the Strongbows in Tesco today had the offer, but the "Scrumpy Jack"
cider did.

why not buy a mag or two at the same time. At least the magazines are
sold at cover price, so there's no Virgin markup.

A HOMEBOY! A DERBY HOMEBOY! I feel like I've met a long-lost brother!

And as it happens, I /am/ a student. Well, on placement, which means I
earn money but I still get the 10% off stuff. Ah, I wish it would never
end....

I bought mine from Victoria Wine, and they still had some in last Saturday.
Vouchers last until 31.5.99.
