Are dvd lens cleaners any good? I've been having a few playback
troubles with my player recently and I'm tempted to buy one. They look
pretty useless though and I don't really want to waste my money. Has
anybody ever tried one and actually noticed improvements with their
player?

What makes you think it's the lens, then? There are a whole heap of
reasons why DVDs don't play back correctly. IMHO, I think such things
are crap. If you're having problems with your player that aren't
consistent (that is, it's the same discs at the same point every time)
take your system (back) to your dealer to get it checked out.

If the unit is outside warranty just lookup on the net "cd laser lens
cleaning" and find out how to do it by hand. Normally distilled water
on a cotton bud and a squirt from an air duster around the assembly is
enough.

Very important to be gently though but the cleaning is more thorough.

I have used a disc style lens cleaner on my PC DVD drive and it cleared up
my misreads no problem but I would keep usage of such a cleaning device to a
minimum and not adopt it as a routine clean (the sort of nonsense advice
given on the packaging)

Not entirely the same thing, but I've never succeeded in fixing anything
with a CD lens cleaner, though I did kill an already glitchy CD-Rom drive
once! Probably because I tried it 5 times in the same day... I later read
that drive cleaners should generally only be used once a year, if at all. Oh
well - live and learn.
