Read review magazines like DVD buyer (i think) and they have as part of it's
rating system, the players ability with CD audio.
A lot of them were rated poorly and I can't remember any that were raved
over because of their handling of CD audio discs.
Sounds ok to me but I am not a total audiophile so I would miss the subtle
differences.

depends on your Cd player and your DVD player - i've yet to hear a sub £1000
DVd player that can match my Rega Planet 2000

It depends on how good (or bad) the respective players are! There's no
design feature inherent to DVD players that would make them sound
better - I imagine most would sound worse as they're built down to a
price.

Possibly better than the CD player in a mini system but, with the
exception of a few high end players from the likes of Cyrus and
Roksan, most DVD players can't beat even decent budget CD players for
music playback. They just aren't optimised for music. What are you
using and what did you have before?

Of course it makes no difference if your DVD player (i.e. mine and most
others) spits out a digital signal, then it`s just a case of whether your
amp has better DAC`s than your CD player. ;)

i think it depends on what cd player you have but the music off your
dvds sound much better than a normal audio cd.

I think newer players do, but my existing model sounds dreadful. DVDs
through a Yamaha DSP-A1 sound wonderful. CDs sound like a cheap and nasty
transistor radio with pillows pushed over the speakers. Complete nightmare!

Jitter caused by the mechanism can still make a difference when playing
audio cd's so this is not entirely true.

My DVD player (a Pioneer DV717) is good but I still use my Marantz CD63 mk2
for CD's - just sounds better to my ears.

And transport stabilisation, and PSU regulation (pref outboard) etc.

If what you claim to be true, is actually true, then the same outboard
DAC should sound the same when attached to the digital output of a 200
quid all-in-one CD player and a £1000 CD transport. Clearly not the
case.

I have a £200 Aiwa CD system, which gives very good sound playing CDs.
Recently I bought a Proline DVD2000 for £120. When I play a CD on this, and
send the sound to the Aiwa, it sounds even better than just playing the CD
on the Aiwa.

Hmmmm point I suppose but then it depends where that 1000 quid has been
spent, I would expect the large percentage of it is in the DAC (and
associated components) anyway.

Apparently Arcam's design brief for their DV88 DVD player (1000 quid) said
that it should sound as good on CD audio as their Alpha 7SE CD player (300
quid) - and the DV88 is rated as one of the best with CDs.
