It wasn't shown but I thought it was implied. He was so straight laced and
putting on a 'normal' front that he killed to keep the fact that he was
secretly gay hidden. He wouldn't be able to face being branded as a cold
blooded killer after his successful army career and would kill himself to
avoid prison and/or the truth coming out.

Vikings? There ain't no vikings here. Just us honest farmers.
The town was burning, the villagers were dead. They didn't need
those sheep anyway. That's our story and we're sticking to it.

I certainly never got that thought from the couple of times I've seen the
film....

thats what i thought..
damn i havent got it on DVD :)
the film ends with the credits, not in our imaginations, so techincally the
answer is NO!
Strangely enough I'm quire aware of this. Although some posters previously
don't seem to be hence my rather veiled imagiations dig!

in this situation TOP POSTING is good..........
Nah, he didn't- we don't get told *what* happens to him after the credits-
we don't need to. Sure you can say a load of things like: "he probably did
kill himself", or "it was implied" or something along those lines- but what
stops you from making anything up? You could say he was abducted by aliens
and get away with it!
Somebody replied saying that he wouldn't have been able to live with the
fact that he'd killed someone or something. All I can say to that is: why
the hell did he wear gloves to hide his fingerprints then? He probably
wouldn't have been caught, so what's the problem. His problem was Lester,
revealing the secret gay side of his personality- but he's now disposed of
Lester.
I suppose the final answer is that *technically* you're friend is right in
what he says- but in a way you could both be right. Films are brilliant
things because they can be read in many different ways depending on who is
watching them. Take Donnie Darko for instance- how many explanations are
there for that!?

No, he bummed him til he shit blood!
In the commentary, Sam Mendes says the film was originally going to start
with the kids being found guilty of Lester's murder, so presumably the
original idea was that he did get away with it. Killing himself would sort
of give the game away as to who killed Lester. No one would know why he
did it but they'd still know he was the murderer.
Not remotely.
You see him afterwards hiding the gun etc...
