Hi there

just to be up to date:
is there any way to copy a DVD (Movie for Home-DVD-Player), e.g. with a
DVD-RAM-Drive ?

I just discovered that in a local store a DVD-Player was playing some parts
of new DVD-Films for showing the advantages of DVD.
The shop-assistence took out the DVD out of this player and I wondered: it
was a DVD-R - disc ! So, can I realy copy DVD-Movies to DVD-R ?
Or how did these movie-parts got on this DVD-R ?

In my opinion there must be a way (or there will be a way in x years) to
copy a DVD-movie like a normal CD (VCD or Music-CD) now with a normal
DVD-ROM and a DVD-RAM (or how it is called) ?

Can anyone tell me the story ?

Greetings

Alex

AFAIK, none of the home decks support the rewriteable computer
DVD-RAM drives. I'm not an expert on standards, but I don't think they
ever will. Theres another standard DVD+RW (or is that DVD-RW) that I
think is earmarked for eventual use in home DVD recorders.

You can bet that some sort of scheme will be implemented to make it
difficult for you to digitally copy DVD movies discs to a rewriteable
disc on consumer gear at least.

Yes, if you pay the 10 grand or so for a professional DVD-R drive
and the 20-30 quid or so for each recordable disc.......

Obviously some distributor/retail chain wanted to make a batch of
promo discs and DVD-R was the most effective way of doing it.

You can already rip MPEG2 movies off of DVD and convert them to MPEG1
and burn them onto CD-R or CD-RW. For a legitimate home user, the
question is why? It offers no advantage.
