I have now seen several adverts for the Pioneer 515 - the latest one
undercutting previous adverts by about £40. My question to the people in
the know out there is: What is this player like? How does it compare to
the 717? Is it worth considering?

Thanks in advance to any replies and advice.

This isn't much use, but I hope to get one real soon for review. I will
post a message once I have had a look at it.

Well I've had one for a week now, and absolutely love it. It's my first DVD
player, so it's hard to compare it to any others, but I paid £450 for it,
region free and delivered, which I condiser to be a bargain. Setting it up is
a breeze, Picture quality is superb on my Panasonic 32" widescreen set, and the
region selection is automatic (i.e. pop in any disc, it picks the region and
plays without a quibble!)

The only tiny complaint I would have is that it doesn't have a SCART output,
not being a European model, but since it has composite and S-Video dedicated
outs, as well as component for those with hi-spec projectors, it should cater
for most peoples needs.

Personally, I can't recommend it highly enough!

Lazer2000 in Manchester UK told me that the japanese region free dv515 import
is much better than the british region 2, dv717!

I don`t think I could do without Scart. The 515 is based upon the same core as the
717 - how can the 515 but substancially better?
I think I`ll still go for the modified 717 from Upgrade Heaven. Multiregion and
fully guaranteed even if the player fails and it is nothing to do with the mod.
Shame other companies can`t offer the same.

It can't be the same, one is assembled in the Uk using Uk parts, the other
uses Japanese parts.

IMHO the 515 & 717 must be very similar machines as when I was out in HK in
last Nov. the 515 had just been released code free with no word on the 717.
Now I've just heard from a friend who's out there that the 515 is still
available (Hk$1000 cheaper then what I paid, ah the joys of early
adoption...) and still no signs of the 717. This leads me to conclude the
above as HK usually stocks all variants if you know where to look UNLESS the
products are identical. Someone is now gonna post technical specs to prove
me wrong...

Cheers.

The 515 is most certainly not as good as the 717. It performs like a 505,
and we have the tech data to prove it. Full review in March HCC.
