I thought I'd better check up on this. Only the publisher of the manga
was carted off to gaol for a while. Anyway, I found a nice DH FAQ

Thanks much, that, sadly, settles matters :-(
By the way, is there a particular name for the anime style used in DH,
where characters appear with excessively simplified art, limbs just
ending in single points, etc? It's the only anime I have like that,
although I've seen the like before.
Oh, and another question :) How many Slayers videos were released in

Ah, that I've heard of, hadn't connected it. I got into anime through
resin figure kits (rather the reverse of usual, I guess), so I've
seen, but never bought, plenty of SD kits.

ADV re-released it, supposedly re-dubbed. I haven't seen nor heard the
new version.

According to an ADV rep, it wasn't redubbed.

There is more than one style of SD, so don't be surprised if the next
bit of SD you see isn't exactly the same.
The only other English language SD video I can think of is Animeigo's
Super Deformed Double Feature, but I wouldn't really recommend it
unless you've seen Bubblegum Crisis and/or Gall Force. And I don't
think you'd like them. Fairy Princess Ren (or whatever they called it)
might be up your street as well. For comics, look out for Dragon Flux
and Roja Fusion (IIRC).

There was also an SD or CB episode of "Ushio & Tora" released in the
UK by Western Connection, IIRC. Also available from ADV in the good
ol' US of A.
Episode 11?
10 regular eps, then about 45mins of SD features.

Probably. I've not seen it. It's on tape 5 of the ADV release.

O ho, I'm being judged :)
My anime collection so far includes Star Blazers (and the Space
Cruiser Yamato movie - I love the image of the Yamato in space),
Evangelion (all the series - looking forward with trepidation to the
movies...), 3x3 eyes, Slayers, Dragon Half, Project A-Ko, Patlabor,
and, most recently, Ghost in the Shell. Stretch it to monster movies
and I've got every Gojira (and that yank version - good monster movie
though) released in the UK, and a couple that weren't, plus the 1985
(?) Gamera - with a thoroughly enjoyable dub, even the music was
decent (though I'm no fan of techno).
Still maintain that opinion ? :-)

It's quite funny in its own right, but you won't get any of the
in-jokes, which are *very* specific to Gall Force (in the case of 10
Little Gall Force) and Gall Force, Bubblegum Crisis and Gaiarth (in
the case of Scramble Wars).
I enjoyed it having only seen BGC, but when I'd seen some of Gall
Force and Gaiarth, I had to watch it again. Interesting etchi bits in
it, BTW ^_-

It is worth avoiding the dub, isnt it???
Has anybody else seen the site thats publishing the manga translated

Anthony
I always thought they just released a sub version then released a dub later
the sub is the only PG i know with nudity in it
The dub's OK IMO. Very, very squeaky - but it's mostly ADV's standard cast.
McAvin plays Rosario (superbly), Paul Sidello is the King, Amanda Winn does a
good Vena...I really, really enjoyed it - far more than if I'd had to read it
as it went along.
"WHAT A STUNNING SEQUENCE OF STUPIDITY!!!!!!!!!"
"A DEMON DOESN'T CARE ABOUT STORY CONTINUITY! I'M GOING TO BEAT YOU UP
ANYWAY!"
- Richard
(Still wishing that ADV would release THHE...grr...damn teases showing the
trailer and then not actually doing the release...)
Bubblegum Crisis, Dirty Pair Flash, Urusei Yatsura: Only You, Super Atragon
2....all off the top of my head, and obviously just anime.
- Richard
Gunbuster has loads, if you haven't seen it or got it you need to. ^_^
I'm sure I read somewhere that ADV didn't release those ?omake. The
UK release was typical Western Connection, ie poor quality and no
longer available...
You've been reading too much 2000AD... ^_^

I'd still guess BGC and Gall Force are not really your style, but once
you get further into anime it helps if you've seen them, if only to say
you don't want to see any more like that. ^_^ SDDF makes no sense at all
unless you know the actual characters in BGC&Gall Force...
BGC is now quite old, light-rock-driven chicks-in-hardsuits fare as is
Gall Force. Neither has much in the way of depth, and IMO Gall Force
is just annoying.
OTOH, I can certainly recommend some other stuff that's similar to the
other shows you've seen. If you really like Yamato, I should imagine you'd
also like My Youth in Arcadia(IIRC) the Galaxy Express 999 movie, which
is lyrical and epic in scale and imagery. And if what you like about
Patlabor is the pace of the movies, you really need to see some Studio
Ghibli/Miyazaki. If you just like the retro feel, buy old - Robotech/Macross,
Gundam (not Wing), BotP/Gatchaman and Nadesico...
If you want to see something different, you'd do better to find yourself
an anime club so you can sample the different genres with less financial
outlay. You can always buy what you like later. Hey, you'll be buying
stuff direct from Japan before you know it. ^_^

I'm perfectly happily ordering kits from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and
wherever, so why not anime? But I only email in English! Likewise, I'd
only buy stuff either dubbed or subbed in English. With that
limitation, I'll try anything once... but I must admit, I'm not really
into the Gundam/giant robots idea - Patlabor and Evangelion work
because they're either 'realistic' (Patlabor) or plain weird (Evas). I
wish I could get a look at VOTOMS, I like the design of the mechs.
Wulf
Yeah... Would you like the URL? (It is Dragon Half We're talking
about isn't it?)
Oh, does anyone know if it's possible to get an English translation of
the Earthian Manga. And can you order Japanese books from English
bookshops if you have the ISBN, or do you have to go somewhere
specialist. (I want DNAngel muchly....)

Katy Coope
Not that I will *ever* succeed in convincing some people here of
this, but theres more to mecha shows than the robots. Sometimes I even
believe it myself. ^_^
If you want to try mecha shows that are a bit different to what
you might expect, I can recommend Patlabor on TV - possibly the most
under-appreciated anime ever to get an English language release -
Martian Successor Nadesico, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, Escaflowne
and of course, Gunbuster! Evangelion you obviously already know about.
Of course, you can like and dislike whatever you want.

I thought they needed less "character sits down and starts rambling on
in a depressed manner for while" but not necessarily a lot more
'action'. I prefer the Patlabor TV series. In some eps the mechs
don't even appear and the whole thing is usually pretty lighthearted
comedy.

Well, I liked both Evangelion and Patlabor, but the Evas weren't
really too important in Evangelion... Gunbuster are REALLY big, as I
understand it, and that's not for me either. What's best between
Macross & Robotech? More specifically, what's got more Battletech
'Mechs in it :)
Wulf
Five star stories has more organic, and much more varied mech designs
than any other series, trouble is that they start at large, and go up
to massive (OK, not as big as the Gunbuster, but pretty big).
The thing about FSS is that it is more about the characters than the
mecha, that is why most mech heads hate it! ^_^

Are you sure you're not a mecha fan? ^_^ The movies are a bit
different to the TV series in feel and pacing - the TV series is a
little more comically orientated.

Gunbuster because of the mecha. If you liked Eva, the chances are you

Er... I think you'd better invest in some fireproof underwear,
very quickly... ^_^
The general opinion seems to be that Macross is better than
Robotech, mainly because Macross is taken to mean "original Japanese
version" not "edited US version compiled from three different series and
with largely revised storyline" (or as its sometimes put, "butchered
pile of smelly pants"... )
Technically, Battletech no longer has any Macross mecha in it,
due to lawsuits and large sums of money paid to lawyers. However, before
the Legal equivalent of the Succession Wars occurred, Battletech had
mecha in it from both Macross and Robotech - because the "Macross saga"
portion of Robotech *was* Macross.
Confused yet? ^_^
http://macross.anime.net/ - The Macross Compendium should help
clear things up. I should point out that "Robotech vs. Macross" is
something of a touchy subject to some anime fans...

That's what I thought, but sometimes what the Japanese prefer need not
be entirely comprehensible (he says, watching 'BANZAI!' on C4 -
although Toyah's in it, I'm still vaguely obsessed by her... show's my

Finally got the entire FSS manga whilst in the States, and I have to

Robotech (the Macross saga) is currently being released by ADV
in the US. I think its either two or three DVDs. A UK release in future
is a vague possibility.
You'd better sit down, theres bad news coming.
AnimEigo are releasing Macross - unedited, and digitally re-
mastered by a committed (I'll leave you to decide whether that means
"dedicated" or "insane"!) obsessive - in the summer, as a DVD box set.
Initial orders are by subscription only, but hopefully by Christmas
they'll be releasing the volumes individually, although the pre-order
box set will be rather cheaper to buy overall.
Heres the bad news. Because of their licensing agreements,
AnimEigo cannot ship the set (or, for that matter, the individual
releases) outside the US or Canada. There may be ways around this, if
you have contacts in either country. You can find out more about the
release at: http://www.animeigo.com/home.t
Longer term, with MVM releasing more and more of AnimEigos back
catalogue in this country, and having committed themselves to DVD,
theres a chance that Macross may get a UK release at some point in the
future. This is speculation, however, and don't hold your breath - I
never did CPR training... ^_^
Quick warning - only UK DVD Macross (and what I suspect this
might be) release so far is Macross II: Lovers Again. For a variety of
reasons, this is considered a "side story" and not part of the official
Macross timeline (unlike, say, Macross Plus). Macross II can come across
as something of a disappointment, but it does have its fans. I haven't
seen enough of it to form a firm opinion.

hmm...I was under the impression that there's a LOT of fuss over Macross
Vs Robotech in the US due to the fact it has aired there. OTOH, here in
the UK, there seems to be very little about this...I'd assumed this was
due to the fact Robotech was never aired/sold here?

Oh, I didn't :) It's one of few mecha anime series I've heard of,
along with Macross, Robotech, Patlabor and the 97 different flavours
of Gundam (and VOTOMS...). I LIKE mecha, but I like them 'realistic' -
Patlabor yes, Gundam no. I'll take a chance on damn huge great
Gunbusters...

Well, if he hasn't got the VHS version you're probably OK.
My opinion of the Gunbuster DVD is, I think, fairly well documented...

The DVDs have, IIRC been disowned by CPM. Unless something has changed recently the last I heard they were due out in two batches
with hard subs at $10 more than the original price. CPM are said to be unhappy about this but... you'd think that by now the dozy
b******s would have learnt from bitter experience that sublicencing titles is the easiest way to much aggravation and flak from your
customers. Most of the early CPM DVDs - the ones with the problems in particular were sublicenced to Image.
Sigh...
Anyway, Votoms is - sortof - like Gasaraki in that it starts off in one place and then goes hurtling off into somewhere else
altogether, and they're both odd. Votoms starts out normal enough but gets seriously strange in the last dozen episodes or so.
The main character Chirico is also one of the hardest (and hardest to like) characters I can think of...

Here's the synopsis from ADV's website:
It's the wildest installment yet as both Ushio and Tora bite off a
little more than they can handle in this special extended collection!
First, the junior priest and the blatant beast confront a trio of
not-so-happy wind demons. Then, in a special Super-Deformed
presentation, things really get out of hand. A creature named
Dirt-licker offers to help Ushio clean the bathroom; Tora encounters a
kitten; and the whole thing ends up with a bizarre tribute to silent
movies! Will Dirt-Licker take Ushio to the showers? Will Tora have to
get a flea collar? Will the weasel-spirited wind demons blow our boys
away? The answer's not blowing' in the wind, it's in the craziest,
wackiest collection of misadventures ever, USHIO & TORA, Volume 5!
Includes bonus Super-Deformed special!

Asuka Langley Soryu is one of the Eva pilots, a red-headed (actually,
pretty orange...) German (suitably) girl who doesn't just THINK she's
perfect, she has incontrovertible proof. Anyone who believes otherwise
clearly has some secret agenda against her. It's never actually
explained in the series exactly what happened to her parents...

I would say the opposite - despite the clear proof (drool), she thinks
she has to convince people she's so damn good.

Well, being a bit more serious, clearly she has a massive problem with
self-image, and a desperate desire and need to be needed. Definitely
deeply insecure.
But that's just not as funny...

Asuka is a desperately insecure person who has developed a
brash, extroverted and domineering personality to hide the
fact from herself. As a result she's convinced that she is
always right and everyone else is wrong.

Gasaraki is probably worth a look even if it is a bit strange. And, if you can still find it PowerDOLLS is another small mecha show
it's based on a console game though, so don't be surprised if you're thrown into the middle of things... [forgive me, it's been ages
since I watched it - too many other things] Oh, and Sakura Wars of course...
IIRC, it did but on Satellite and a good many years ago now. Also Kiseki started releasing it on video a while back - but never got
very far. I think it's safe to say that it never entered the public conciousness the same way the BotP did or the way it did in
America
Oh well, I'll wait for the US release then... I remember hearing quite a few bad things about the UK release so (especially as at
the time I was looking for something else to do - I thought I'd found it but all I'd found was a way to scorch the carpet, burn and
cut myself and inhale noxious fumes. Oh, I forgot 'get extermely upset.)
In answer to the second question... pass. I *suspect* Robotech, merely becuase that's 3 series [Macross, Mospeada and Southern
Cross]
As to which is better... Well Robotech is 3 series stuck together with a bit of filler and some rewriting to make a consistent
storyline whereas Macross is Macross. There are differences between Macross and the equivalent episodes of Robotech but don't ask me
what they are because while I've got the first 16 episodes of both I've only watched the Macross episodes and that was ages ago.
IIRC Robotech has just had an 'American audience sensibilities filter' passed over it (for Macross). Oh yes, and Protoculture is
radically different between the two series.
Plus it helps if you've seen the TV series before you watch the second OAV series. - Well it does a bit since a number of the OAVs
follow on from TV episodes (f'rex the Griffon episodes and the one where thye go underground (again).
Anyway, I'd agree. Patlabor (TV) is well worth a watch. It's not really a 'mecha show' any more than 'The Sweeney' was a 'car show'
^-^ but it *is* good. Funny at times, occasionally serious.
But... by all accounts, the individual discs will be general release. The Urusei Yatsura ones are, and the individual KOR tapes are
too. So you'll be able to order them from your usual DVD supplier...
On the other hand, mention MCoG, or Dogtanian the Muskeeter to a
Britisher, and see what happens :)

Robotech aired on satellite in the UK within the last four
years, but as you say it never entered the public
consciousness. I wonder if some of the fuss over Robotech
vs Macross is because when it was first shown the American
audience didn't know that Robotech was a re-edited
compilation of three different series, and when they found
out about the original they realised what a mess had been
made of it.
I think the least said of the Kiseki release the better,
they only did 20 episodes and, as I recall, even left the TV
continuity announcers voice-overs in on the later tapes!
FHE made a much better job of their release.

Which will be good news, if it happens.
AnimEigo first announced they were releasing Macross TV
about two years ago I think. Rumour had it that the series
would be out by Christmas last year, and that was later than
the originally quoted release date.
I'm not sure if the continued delay is because they want to
make it a first class quality release or because they keep
putting it to one side to work on other releases.
Whichever it is I expect the series will get released one
day, I just hope the individual disks do go on general
release so I can get hold of them. ^_^
ISTR hearing at AWA last year that it was a matter of Overwhelming
Project That Takes A Very Long Time In Its Own Right.
Eh. The longer we keep Macross out of the world, the longer I'm happy.

Justin was referring to you writing your reply in the space above the
message you were quoting in a particular message, a practice known as
"top-posting" which is frowned upon in these (and all right-thinking)
parts of usenet.
>Im using Free Agent and I rebuilt my system last week, have I
>forgotten to set something?
No, just avoid being a lazy bugger. You don't do it on all your posts
(e.g. you didn't do it on the one I'm replying to now), but you did do
it on the post Justin was referring to.
I'm not sure if Free Agent has this feature, but in the full version
of Agent, you can double click on this link to see the post Justin was
referring to: <3b33a368...@news.freeserve.net>. When I double
click in my copy of (full) Agent, a "Launch URL" dialog pops up asking
me whet sort of URL it is. If I tell it it's a Message-ID it displays
that message. Try it in Free Agent and see whet it does.
If that doesn't work in Free Agent, here's the URL of the message as
stored in Google Groups for you to look at:

breathe easily, young (?) man (?), at least after the first episode (5
to go) it's OK, if a bit stereotypical (and some very suspect imagery
every time our heroine looks at HER heroine...). Not sure I like the
mecha, but they were training mecha, maybe the later ones are better.
Evidently it's not too serious. I have to admit to a heretical
preference for dub over sub though, I like to be able to let my eyes
wander over the screen, not have to keep them on the subtitles!

I'm fairly lucky in being able to read fairly fast. I can "scan"
the subs at the same time as watching the action. It is about my only

The first subbed anime I saw was AnimEigos/Anime Projects
Bubblegum Crisis and I think that rather spoiled me!

I don't mind dubs generally, but I've seen so much subtitled
stuff now dubs are starting to sound a bit funny! Watching some recent
US TV anime. I'm quite surprised to find that generally, the quality of
voice acting has improved a bit, but they still have a tendency to pick
"wrong" sounding voices...

I must admit I'd find Gunbuster easier to take without the
hyperventilating little-girl voices... I'm beginning to pine for
Sigourney Weaver...
Somewhat off-topic, but have you seen/heard the Dubbed 'Gamera,
Guardian of the Universe' from about 1985 or so? Excellent dubbing,
with lots of verbal jokes (80-meter turtle destroys baseball stadium
in background, while cop in foreground yells "Move along! There's
nothing to see here!"), much of which is clearly deliberate.
Now, to combine my more expensive hobbies, can I get any kits of
Gunbuster...

I also have every Gojira released in the UK (and a couple that

really, just not Big G). But Gamera has the best soundtrack, both
voice & music (and I am NOT a techno fan...).

HLJ has no kits, just an action figure. Hobbyfan has nothing, but I
found some recasts at AnimeBox. I might get myself a matching set of
Noriko & Kazumi in 1/8 scale...

Damn... I keep doing that... adjusting for the wider audience...

Somehow I never thought of the characters in Gunbuster as
having hyperventilating little-girl voices. But then since
lots of anime features little girls perhaps I've just got
used to that sort of voice.
Have you seen the 'next episode' trailers for Kare Kano? Now
there's hyperventilating little-girl voices for you! ^_^

I think there was a Gunbuster kit made, if anyone has it
Hobbylink Japan will have it, if it's still available that
is. I did see a model of Noriko in her, er, flight suit, a
long while back. But it was horribly expensive and not a
very good likeness of her.

Hmmm, well you've experienced odd/fucked up now you need to cover a
couple of the other bases.
Mad - Child's Toy
Shoujo - Fushigi Yugi

I got used to it pretty quickly so that now I don't even have to
'read' the subs that often. A quick scan of the lines and then let
some other part of the brain sort it out and make it fit the speech
whilst I carry on watching everything else.

Had a look.... only a Noriko action doll is still available
<http://www.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?YLSAD-11> whilst the other two
are unavailable/OOP
<http://www.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?KYDGUNB><http://www.hlj.com/cgi

By the way, I agree about the doll, not that good. £78 btw.
Hmm. Perhaps one is looking for Miss Gravel Voiced 2032, Priss
(from Bubblegum Crisis, original OAVs)?

Oh, they do, they do. Some UK anime companies have learned the
hard way not to leave sporting equipment around when discussing
"Westernisation" at anime cons... ^_^

I think I'll have to stick loyally to the good old "Godzilla
March", I'm afraid! ^_^

But how will you recreate that famous "Gainax bounce" in resin?
I know - "Special chemicals!" ^_^

Okay, no harm done.

Hmm... anytime the name 'Priss' is mentioned, I think of Daryl Hannah
in Blade Runner... it can take hours to get back to the
conversation...
Wulf
I *think* that might be the proportions used for Nitoushinden (The name
actually comes from 2-head-body [obviously legs count as body...)
allegedly)
While SD Gundams (animated) have elbows and actually have legs, the kits
don't have elbows and only have feet - actually they could be considered
very short legs. Anyway they definitely lack knees.
When I used to draw figures (way back when I was a kid) I used to draw
them 1-2-2 [that's in heads] but apparantly it should be more 1-3-3 or
some such...

Thats why we have an Orbital Weapons Topic Platform on permanent

Any idea if it was one of these:
http://www3.animebox.com.hk/cat_gunbuster.htm
None of these are too expensive for resin figure kits, but I know this
supplier is a recaster, so that knocks the price down. I'm considering
buying the 3rd & 4th figures (the 1/8 scale ones). Exactly how good a
likeness they are isn't too clear from the photos.

what does 'shoujo' mean anyway?

Shoujo is anime which would be stereotypically enjoyed by girls.
(trying to cover all angles here). Ahhh! Cherry blossom, KAWAIII.
or: Ahhh! A plate, KAWAIII. or: Ahhh! The face of Lucifer in the
tea leaves, KAWAIII !! (?)
See the sub-section 'CLAMP' where everybody is their own bisexual dead
mother who is destined to save the universe by destroying it... whilst
acting really gay and saying kawaii a lot ^_^

As far a looking like the characters, the fifth one is the nicest, tho
none of them are particularly good likenesses. I have a couple of the
Gunbuster manga, and these kits feature in them. I always wanted the
kit of the Eltrium myself. Along side the Sol Bianca, that was my
favorite anime space craft design ever.

A FY recommendation from Stuart? What is the world coming to?
Next thing you know, I'll be pontificating on how realistic Gundams
are.
