“Ulzana’s Raid”

--------------------------------

(1972 / Burt Lancaster stars)

--------------------------------

ITV4 TV channel (UK), 11.55 pm, Tuesday 13 September;
repeating 12.55 am, Friday 16 September.
(Literally Saturday morning but included in Friday’s TV listings.)

--------------------------------
=================================================================

It is my solemn duty to tell you that you are NOT to set your timer to
record this film on ITV4 (UK) TV channel.
It wont do you any good.

I had to give it a *95* certificate.
Only people over the age of 95 years are permitted to view this film
“Ulzana’s Raid.”
If you are under 95 years of age your mind is still too immature and
your character too underdeveloped to be able to cope with these
filthy, disgusting, immoral, unethical images and you may well become
depraved and corrupted beyond redemption by this disgraceful, obscene
film if I allow you to watch it.

So no, DON’T set your timer to record “Ulzana’s Raid” if you are below
the age of 95 years.

I can’t let you do it. I have to protect you youngsters below the age
of 95 years from the disgusting images in that film which will deprave
and corrupt you if I permit you to view them. So I had to give
“Ulzana’s Raid” a *95* certificate.

--------------------------------

WHAT IS THE QUICKEST, EASIEST WAY TO STOP A STAGECOACH / BUGGY /
WAGON / HORSE-DRAWN VEHICLE OR LONE RIDER?

If you are a bandit or an “Injun” or the United States Cavalry ….how
do you STOP a horse-drawn vehicle or lone rider?

Answer: shoot one of the horses.

But because we have this moral objection to cruelty to animals
(rightly so), film makers, particularly of 1950s ‘westerns,’ have been
stuck with screening this ridiculous historical inaccuracy, the
spectacle of bandits or Injuns or cavalry desperately pursuing a
stagecoach or rider for ten minutes as they try to catch up……….. when
they could stop them instantly by just shooting one of the horses.

--------------------------------

“Ulzana’s Raid” in my experience is the only Hollywood ‘western’ to
deviate completely from that convention and to show the Injuns
shooting the horses to stop a horse-drawn carriage or lone rider.

That can’t be faked. It was really happening during the making of the
film, wasn’t it?……or……is there a way for film directors to cause a
horse to fall without killing it? Either way it’s not nice.

However, it doesn’t stop there. And that is why I felt duty-bound to
give this one a *95* certificate, meaning if you are under the age of
95 years, I cannot permit you to view “Ulzana’s Raid.”

--------------------------------

Did the Injuns in North America really do that to the white
Europeans?

And - this is important - were the Injuns doing those things to other
Injun tribes before the whites came?

So are the Injuns worse than the whites, then?

Did the Injuns deserve and need to be tamed and herded onto
reservations on infertile land….notwithstanding our modern-day PC
brainwash?

Were the Injuns of North America an anachronism - an inappropriate and
embarrassing hangover / leftover from the last major survivalist
emergency of 2,700 years ago?

--------------------------------

Among the harrowing scenes in “Ulzana’s Raid” are those of a woman
begging her husband to kill her to prevent the Injuns from taking her
alive, holding out her arms with her eyes closed in a state resembling
ecstasy as she awaits her husband’s bullet through her forehead. And
then in his panic and terror of the Injuns, the husband rides away at
full gallop, but the Injuns shoot the husband’s horse from under him,
and then he puts his gun in his mouth and pulls the trigger rather
than be taken alive himself by the Injuns.

--------------------------------

Would you feel the need to kill your wife and then to commit suicide
yourself if *the British* were about to capture you?

Which is the superior race?

--------------------------------

In cinematic presentations on the big screen, in the genre called
‘westerns,’ there was usually just a brief one-second glimpse of the
tortured remains of the white European victims of the North American
Injuns. However, with modern technology you can pause at the crucial
scene and drool over it, if you feel that way inclined.

That is why I had to give “Ulzana’s Raid” a *95* certificate. If you
are under the age of 95 years, you are not allowed to view “Ulzana’s
Raid,” as your mind is still too immature and your character too
undeveloped to be able to cope with these images and you may become
irretrievably depraved and corrupted as a result of viewing some of
the scenes in this film.

--------------------------------

It dates from 1972, around the time when “A Fistful of Dollars,” “The
Wild Bunch” etc. (courtesy of Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah) had
introduced the fashion of casting off all former restraints and
depicting extreme violence close up in all its gore as a matter of
deliberate policy.

Nobody asked for it.

Just as nobody asked for the privilege of having every living room in
the country transformed into a porno movie den every half hour via the
TV screen while Aunt Fanny is visiting for afternoon tea.

--------------------------------

MARY WHITEHOUSE AND FRANK PAKENHAM WERE RIGHT

In and around the year when “Ulzana’s Raid” was issued, 1972, it was
fashionable in England to ridicule Mary Whitehouse and Frank
Pakenham.

Now many of us regret ridiculing them because we have found out the
hard way that Mary Whitehouse and Frank Pakenham were right in many
ways.
Human beings do tend to be imitative and repetitive, especially the
youngsters, and so a civilisation should be extremely careful not to
allow the displaying of images of extreme violence as a matter of
course to growing children. I fully endorse Mary Whitehouse and Frank
Pakenham on that.

Regarding erotic material, meaning images of two or more consenting
adults f***ing and sucking and licking each other’s beautiful places -
that should not be banned but should be confined - by law - to
specialist videos and specialist TV channels, and not paraded on
screen in our living rooms every half hour while Aunt Fanny is
visiting for afternoon tea.
Nobody asked for that and the vast majority don’t want it.

Obviously Hollywood was well infiltrated by ruling group stooges at an
early stage.
There is a ruling group agenda in the progressive waiving of
censorship dating from the late 1960s.

Political correctness and environmental degradation went into top gear
at the same time.

The agenda is the destruction of western civilisation.

However, the ruling group are mentally ill too and don’t know whether
they are coming or going, same as the rest of us!

--------------------------------

“Ulzana’s Raid” is of interest in the history of mainstream cinema
because it was a ‘one off.’ After 1972, the reactive current from
animal rights groups became more vociferous, and since then it has
been common for major cinematic productions to include a statement in
the final credits to the effect that ‘no animals were harmed in the
making of this motion picture.’

Obviously throughout history bandits and Injuns and armies shot one of
the horses to stop a wagon/buggy/stagecoach or lone rider. “Ulzana’s
Raid” is one of the rare cinematic works to depict the historical
reality. Elsewhere we have the surreal spectacle of John Wayne or the
Injuns or bandits or cavalry feverishly chasing after a horse-drawn
vehicle for ten minutes desperately trying to catch up…….

In the final analysis, after careful consideration, I have decided
that I can’t let you watch “Ulzana’s Raid” unless you are over the age
of 95 years.
It’s for your own good, believe me.
People under the age of 95 years lack the emotional maturity and lack
the character development to be able to cope with the images in this
film and there is a grave danger that those of you under the age of 95
years may be depraved and corrupted if you are permitted to view
certain scenes in this film.

I’ve had to give it a *95* certificate.
So do NOT set your timer to record “Ulzana’s Raid” if you are under
the age of 95 years.
And you must avert your eyes or leave the room if your grandparents
are viewing it.
The timer details are given here solely for the convenience of mature
adults over the age of 95 years:

It's okay if you are under 95 you will be able to watch it due to TV
network editing. A scene where Lancaster brings down his own horse is
edited out. You won't see his horse tumbling into the dirt.
I don't at all see the point of your extraodinary long post on an
obscure forty year old western on this board though.

After the Allende business in Chile in 1973, Henry Kissinger was heard
to say:
"If I have to choose between justice and stability, I will choose
stability."

I'm an old man and my youthful idealism and naivety have been killed
dead by the army of imbeciles I've had to put up with over the years.
Reluctantly I now agree with that statement of Henry Kissinger:
"If I have to choose between justice and stability, I will choose
stability."
The emotionalism in the ballads wont change that.
Even to the extent of breaking treaties.
Isn't it well established that a treaty between two tribes is valid
only until one or both of the parties to the treaty choose to discard
it?
"A treaty forever, George Washington signed?"
No, be practical.
"If I have to choose between justice and stability, I will choose
stability."
(Until we humans make the collective decision to go back to the Garden
of Eden.)
And the emotionalism in the ballads wont dissuade me from that view,
now that I'm older and wiser.
