A friend of mine recently bought an antique strong box, and has asked me
to help him find out a little more about a singular document that he
discovered inside.

The document is an original legal agreement dated 30 September 1875
between William Chesterman of Sheffield and Ezekiel Bickham Chesterman
of Bath (formerly of Sheffield). It is on large lined paper (approx. A3
size), wrapped in oil paper and tied with string, legal fashion. Doesn't
look like it's been opened since the day it was written out by Burbeary
& Smith Solicitors, Sheffield.

Basically Bill Chesterman was the owner of a measuring tape
manufacturing firm in Sheffield and Zeke (presumably a relative, the
document doesn't say) was for a time his manager. The firm traded as
James Chesterman & Co.

By mutual agreement (i.e. this document), Zeke was bought out for £1500
(hell of a lot of money in 1875) and pissed off to live in Bath on
condition that he never engaged in any business involving the
manufacture of "measuring tapes, steel rules, squares, measuring chains
or any other device manufactured by James Chesterman & Co."

The document was registered at Companies House on 9 October 1875, and
witnessed by Richard Hind Laughton and Ernest Froggatt.

There's probably some interesting local history behind this.... Why was
Zeke bought out for such a large sum when he was only a manager? Why did
Bill want him out of the way? I'm intrigued, and would like to hear from
anyone who can throw any more light on these bits of paper.

My friend is more interested in hearing the story than receiving offers
of value for the papers, though anyone with a proven family interest
would be welcome to first refusal.

No references to Companies House, usual official records &c. please, I
know how to do all that. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has
something similar as part of their family folklore, either in Sheffield
or Bath.

Cheers, thanks for your time.

Rabone Chesterman make precision engineering measuring devices (rulers,
protractors, verniers etc.) Same company? They might be able to help,
that's if they're still going, they might have been taken over by James
Neil.

cos bailey group have titles all over "middle england" and in the
intervening years, many may have moved..

TSW / Spotlight might also like a "human interest" story such as
this...

Well thanks for all the advice folks - I'm going to start at Rabone
Chesterman's - I'd heard of them but didn't know they made measuring
instruments.

Failing that, off to the press. I bet there's a reight good story behind
this. If I ever find out what it is, I'll post it up.

Cheers - March

true, thanks for pointing that out, I'll have to reconfigure my neural
net so that such glaring errors in reality simulation don't pass
through again...
