Derisory terms are often used to describe common or cheap foodstuffs.
Corned beef gets ' Corned Dog ' . Margarine is often called scrape as in
Bread and Scrape.

Never heard that one, I have heard of corned beef as corned dog though,
no idea why.

"Potted Dog" is not an uncommon term for potted beef around the
Sheffield area, where you'll find rather good examples of the stuff.
Goes very nicely on a breadcake, although the addition of Henderson's
isn't recommended as it turns the bread into a soggy black mush.
Now I wonder if John Wenninger's on Abbeydale Road are still trading
(maybe March may know, as it's on the way into town from Totley), as
their "potted dog" was particularly good, as were their black puddings
and pork pies.

Yep - that's how I remember it, too. Used to love the tomato flavoured
version, as well. And the tomato flavoured pork sausages. Two things I
haven't seen anywhere else, either. Now I'm getting hungry
again.......
cheers

There is a butcher on Hecky market who makes his own sausages, real meat and
stuff. Fillings like Beef, lamb with mint, pork and garlic, pork and apple
and the dreaded tomato. Yum yum!

We used to have tomato flavoured tomatoes in supermarkets when I was younger,
but I've not seen them for years either.

I bought some in Morrisons in Huddersfield, not so long ago. Buy one,
get one half price and they were very tasty!

Found some in Bradford today - Hutchinson's in the new Rawson Market
make their own tomato sausages, along with other flavours, and very
tasty they are too. They're not particularly cheap at £1.38 a pound, but
they're well worth paying a bit extra for. Yummy!
Same here!
Andy (in Leeds)
They were selling it on a Froggy sausage stall at the Huddersfield
Internation Market back in the summer - said it was some kind of
dried white sausage but it certainly looked like what used to be
seen on the pavements. I suspect that some European legislation was
passed that banned undersized ones completely and allowed big ones
to be harvested by the French :-)

Tomato sausage was very common at one time but I see it quite rarely
nowadays, and when I do see it I buy some. Asda used to do something
that went by the name of tomato sausage when I used to shop there a
couple of years ago, but they were very mean with the tomato
flavour. Still, if the "tomato" sausages were burned a bit and
swimming in a plate of tinned tomatoes they weren't bad. I used to
buy Asda's "Italian" herby/spicy chipolatas if they had them because
they actually tasted of tomato, and tasted even better when
cremated.
I do believe that Morrisons still sell them, also one of the butchers
in Bradford meat market .

Is it still in existence? ive not seen it for ages. The place where it was
dispatched from on Armley road closed a while ago, but i'll keep my eyes
peeled for it in the shops.
Andy
It used to be sold in Butchers and Bakery shops, I like potted dog.
Another thing that is sadly missing is cow heels, wonderful when making
a stew.

The "Bowlers" potted-meat (or dog) I refered to was dispached from a place
on Armley road near Farrels electronics factory. I am 99% sure that it is no
longer available. I think that the people in this thread who have said that
it is still around, are confusing it with the very similar "Bowyers" brand
name.
The butchers shop on ArmleyTown Street that you mention is called Todds.
They DO sell good stuff (I like their scotch-eggs) but they do charge
accordingly (and then some!)
See ya Dan!!

I don't remember the affair in question - but I do remember Graftons
(several shops around the town centre) and their 'potted dog crustys'.

Have they all closed down now then ?
