They sell enoki but the shimenji shelf space was empty :-(

Is it always so deserted?

The shimenji shelf or the supermarket?

Either way, I blame the credit crunch.

Chris H,
He's predictable, but that's to be expected.

They've been sending us a vast amount of junk mail, but I've not felt
like going as yet...

It's just a supermarket. However, it seems to be a supermarket that sells
mainly food, and isn't filled with crap chart CDs, phones, electronics and
brands of TV/DVD players that you've never heard of.

Some of the food even looked interesting and unusual.

And expensive.

The food packaging makes it look interesting. A quality that is sometimes,
but not always. matched by the contents.

Yes. Avoid the cumberland Scotch Eggs and the Australian Root beer.

Seems like generally sound advice to me!

Me too.

But somehow I don't think I would have been tempted. The Cumberland
description usually means that sausage meat has been thoroughly over herbed
which does not bode well for a Scotch Egg and Australian Root beer just
doesn't tick any boxes at all. Cooper's is a different matter entirely. As
to a lesser extent are Touhy's and VB but I don't think they get this far.

You can get VB in a few bars in Coventry.

Austalian Root beer isn't the same as US root beer - it's more like
sasparilla.

I found some bottles of Coopers something-or-other in a Tesco in Devon a few
years ago; it confirmed my belief that the Aussies keep the best stuff for
themselves. I'm not entirely sure I would want to go into a bar in Coventry
that sold VB but I've got an old grouch mood coming on and we can do better
draught beers in this country still - can't we? If we can't there's always
Munton's Traditional Bitter homebrew.

Bar 1450 on Spon Street is a fine place, with a massive selection of bottled
beers from around the world, and Inspire used to be OK.

Then again, I've not been out in Coventry for a while - not too bothered
since the daughter came along!

My preference is for real ale as well...
