My son is going to Merevale Hostel with his class shortly but I have
never heard of this place. I have discovered Merevale Hall which is not
open to the public so does anyone know what this Hostel is and can give
me more info.

There appears to be a hostel of sorts on a small road called "waste lane"
which runs from the A5 (near the grendon side of Atherstone) to the B road
which runs from grendon through baddesley ensore towards coleshill
(B4114?).

The surrounding area is very nice despite the name of the road!

Corinne,

Nigel has got the correct place in his reply. I believe the
buildings are owned by Birmingham Youth Service or some
similar organisation and used on an infrequent basis.

They are on Folly Lane, but vehicle access is off the A5
along Waste Lane and where Waste Lane goes right,
carry straight on and the buildings are about 100 yards on
the right. They are in open countryside, but somewhat blighted
by adjacent remains of where coal waste was dumped from the
nearby colliery (now closed). Grid Ref is SP285982.

if anymore info needed let me know.

Its a nice area for walking - the mine was closed a long time ago and they are
landscaping the bit where the coal/slag was dumped (now flat).

Also when i've walked past there with the dog and son I noticed pictures on
the wall, plus there is a small playground.

Can't help any more.....

Folly lane does sound nicer than waste lane though doesn't it

Corrine,

Not exactly sure; but always got the impression it was used as a
outward bound centre. It is not, as far as I am aware, permaently
manned, or used regularly. It is pre-fabricated construction and
not very big. I would think they would use it as a base, but to do
what, I don't know. I could make a few local enquiries if you
wish; I have some good contacts.

As Nigel said, the walking in reasonably good; we do have better areas
though (Hartshill/Mancetter).

Nigel,

Do you do much walking locally - or it just a case of exercising
the dog?

Thank you all for your help - I just wondered why a school would go to a
hostel for a day trip. Now I know its not a farm I'll let him go and
find out what he did there afterwards -

RE farms - my son went to one in nursery, two in reception class, one in
Y1, one in Y2, and one in Y3. I've strted complaining about the lack of
imagination when planning school trips and have refused to send him to
any more farms - we've been threatened with one this year.

Just cos we live in inner city Birmingham they think our kids need to
learn heaps about farms!!!

I have found a bit more about the place; as suspected it is run
by Birmingham Youth Services and used by Birmingham schools.

Seems that it is used for a few days every six/seven weeks,
Usually under supervision of teachers. They take them to see a
bit of the countryside; to the swimming baths etc.

I get the impression that although the facilities are basic they
are well organised.

So yet another way to take the city kids into the country. i wish they'd
go somewhere more useful on these trips after all we parents pay for
them. The letter says the trip is part of the curriculum etc but we
still have to pay for it. (Actually legally we don't but they make you
morally obliged to donate £1.50). At least I'm not paying for Indian
dancers any more - 3 times in the infants we were asked for £1 each to
get some dancers in.
