Hi,

I'm quite old enough to remember UseNet being used /a lot/ (I don't mean the binary NZB groups, of course)). In a way it's nice that the idiot spammers are still using it as they do keep some groups, like this one, alive.

But sadly almost no-one else is.

Nextdoor (https://nextdoor.co.uk/) seems to do a good job locally but with ads - however the ads are the only reason it stays afloat. It is rather more local than the UseNet groups. Being in Bramley the group I use covers Bramley, Shalford, Wonersh, Shamley Green and Cranleigh (and possibly a few other places). It's quite well-used so it's worth trying but it /is/ moderated.

Have a look.

Take care,
Phil.

I do my best. Fortunately my two main UK groups - uk.sport.cricket and
uk.sci.weather - are still going strong, though nowhere near as busy as
they were say 15 years ago. I don't see much spam, as my news server -
news.individual.net - does a very good job of filtering it out.

Thanks. I did try the Cranleigh one (I'm not sure if it's the same one
as yours) a few months back, but I found that it wasn't at all to my
taste. II attempted to unsubscribe, but it seemed to be impossible, so
I'm still getting their emails but I don't read them.

Hi John,

1. The groups overlap so that they cover adjacent areas.

2. I do agree that it's not to everybody's taste, mine more or less included - but it /is/ getting better as more people use it and quite a few people I know here do use it. However as far as they're concerned I usually see them personally - Bramley isn't really big enough for people to use the I'Net to communicate. :)

3. One guy, from Shalford, is offering free help for people who don't understand the I'Net and suggested running Linux, which I do but he doesn't and, if he needs me, I'll help him with Linux. I sent him a PM and he suggested it. He's a Windoze guy, I think. I'm not really an actual expert but I do know a lot more about Linux (in my case Mint Xfce) than he does. It is a kind offer but he's got no takers yet.

So I'd suggest that you occasionally look at Nextdoor - I do about once a fortnight.

Take care,
Phil.

And, John, I did look at news.individual.net. It's very cheap and it does
keep the very few groups I use.

However those groups are almost never spammed.

The server I normally use is this one, I just wanted to look at the
uk.local.surrey archive which is why I was on Google. This server is
free. It has no filtering and keeps posts for about 4 months.
