Also remembered
Sawyers - Now a carpet shop on the retail park at TTC.
Quenchers - Is it closed now? I remember taking my (now) wife there for a
drink and there were topless go-go dancers on! That was around 1984 ish.
Cascades - Is that still open? What happened?
What was the name of the bar that was in the UCI (or AMC as it was then?)
I used to DJ at all of the above venues/pubs.
The Ironmaster was indeed a portakabin type thingy, and was situated on
Sainsbury's car-park when Sainsbury's was still in the town centre, so would
be where M&S is now.
Sawyers died a death .. too many kids and drugs I think.
Quenchers ... now that used to ba a place. My mom was a cleaner there, I
used to DJ there wityh my brother and my other brother worked behind the bar
and on the door.
Cascades was a nightclub, I DJ'd there too. It was on the same site as
Quenhers and they both closed about 18 months ago, as they had no customers.
(My current girlfriend worked behind the bar there.)
The site is currently for sale and is being used by Debenhams as a store
room.
And finally, the Bar at the UCI was the Film Exchange. I never DJ'd there,
but did do a couple of Karaoke nights.
In case you were wondering, I've been DJing now since 1983... man and boy as
they say.
There ya go ....

Bloody 'ell - now you're reviving some scary memories. Cascades every week
with Paul Baynham and Clive Jones. Last I saw of Clive DJ'ing was in Asda.
How the mighty fall!
Steve
Last time I saw Paul he was DJing abroad somewhere (this would have been
about 1992...) Any of you lot remember Carl Stokes or Kev Thursfield?
Jani
Don't remember either of the two names mentioned, but might know them if i
saw a pic or something....

Carl was the drummer in Cancer, and Kev fronted Bigfoot. Does that help?
Jani
I know those pair - Carl & Kev -I was a regular at most of the rock / rnB
nights - from the Ironmaster through to Barrys pub at the Duke in
Wellington - I used to alway be taking photos - Me & Gary Worrall(and many
others!) started Stuff magazine.
Perhaps I'll put an archive of pix online one day.

Talking of Bayston Hill, I was amazed to hear it mentioned last night on
"This Is Your Life" as the former stamping ground of actor Christopher
Timothy.
Does anyone know if the Nags Head in Pontesbury is still trading?

Carl did drum with Bad Blood around 1982/83 ish and I heard he went to USA
with some thrash metal band.
I never see them around. Some other names were Baldi (Gary something! lead
guitar) and Paul Maiden (Bass player) now working at Sainsburys in the
Bakery, Shep (keyboards & CB radio).
Remember CB radio? Enough memory stirring!

I believe the Nags Head is still trading, but not sure if the Mytton Arms at
Habberley is.
There is also the hoohaa over the Fox at Ryton trying to get change of
planning to turn it into a private house. Has this been resolved yet?

Well, Paul's making a fortune abroad, apparently (lucky so-and-so) and Kev
was juggling music, a business career and family, last I heard.

Cancer were more successful in the US than here, I reckon. "Some thrash
metal band", indeed! <BG>

I remember Paul ... still trying to place you, though. (I remember the
name!) Were you smallish and dark-haired, in those days?
Jani
PS yes, you were indeed posting upside-down ;-)

I do a bit of computer coaching for a friend of a friend, and one day his
son walked in, and said he went to school with me. He knew stuff about me
that I had forgot! Weird.
I have half a mind to start a thread on Stirchley Upper, as that's all I
left with....

right way up?
The path we walked to the Royal Oak, through farmland from Bayston Hill,
emerged almost directly outside the pub, and didn't take us past the
Compasses.

Mytton Arms eh? Named after Mad Jack Mytton, presumably?

This sad fate befell my regular watering hole here in Sussex, the Angler's
Rest at Barcombe Mills. I have no doubt that many more pubs will be lost in
this way.

Oh, same here. I knew a lot of people, then, but sometimes the names and
faces escape me now ...

Hokay, I'll go for that <g> Do you remember Dave Button (taught history and
held good parties in Randlay :)

I seem to remember Michael Aspel saying that Christopher Timothy was
actually born in Shropshire, and that he attended the Priory School in
Shrewsbury - my old stamping ground as well as Bayston Hill (though long
before my time).
