I'm thinking of moving from Bury (off Tottington Road) to Walkden.
What's Walkden like as a place to live - not too bothered about the
nightlife etc as it is near enough to Manchester for that. Just want
to know if its quite quiet, has any shopping facilities and is it
crime-ridden (ie an extension to Moss Side etc)?

Don't do it!!

Bury is a nice town with good links to Manchester via the tram and is
relatively crime free for Greater Manchester.

Walkden is dangerously close to Little Hulton, an area rife with crime,
and it also has estates that are not pleasant in their own right.

Walkden does have a shopping centre but it is not as extensive as
Bury's.

I would stay right where you are.

Thanks

I don't think Walkden is quite as bad as Martin has painted it. Yes, it
has it's iffy areas, but what town hasn't these days ? Much will depend
on just where in Walkden you are thinking of moving to. I don't know
where Martin lives, but if you, Simon, want to e-mail me with a location
I would be better able to advise you.

I live in Little Hulton and it's nowhere near as bad as a) it used to be
and b) many other bits of Manchester. Apart from any thing else the
estates are the 'other' side of Little Hulton from Walkden and unless
the locals have nicked a car, they won't travel that far!

Walkden has a shopping centre which is fair, though not wonderful, and a
few other amenities. It's on the A6 and has a railway station so public
transport is ok.

Hey, well said Andy. I spend a lot of time in Walkden and I have had
zero trouble there so far. If it wasn't for a few 'nutters' LH would be
a much better place.

Hi im Criss
I am from Little Hulton I have lived in Walkden and Little Hulton all my life and can Honestly say that i have Never had any problems whatsoever with any of my neighbours or locals.
Although if you look for trouble you will definatly find some.

Some of the kids are a bit cheeky but thats the way we like them.
Most bad reviews you hear/read are from people who have never been to or socialised in Little Hulton.
Walkden is a really nice place with stunning Parks including Blackleach Country Park.
Theres pubs dotted around that are friendly and show sports etc and theres a Wetherspoons in the centre that has Friendly Security
You could do a lot worse mate and having been to bury a few times , i think it would be a good swap for you
Id be happy to show you round too.
Good luck
Criss
