I am trying to compile a list of well-known contemporary Welsh achievers
in a wide range of activities, the arts, entertainment, politics,
sciences, sport, life style, and would be grateful of any nominations,

thanks

Perhaps I'm going off on a bit of a tangent but....

Has anyone seen the Knowhere Guides?

They are guides compiled by Internet users about places in the UK.

There pages are at www.knowhere.co.uk

Colwyn Bay even has a page which is at www.knowhere.ac.uk/554.html

Back to the subject of the thread, it does have a list of famous residents
and ex-residents of Colwyn Bay.

In the Daily Post today it had a small little tiny list of famous Welsh
people in America, well, not famous welsh people as such, but famus americans
who have some sort of welsh connection......Among these where President
Abraham Lincoln,Bob Hope,Nixon, andy Williams and some more who I can't
remember right now! Don't suppose thats any help anyway!

But we do have:
Tom Jones,
Shirley Bassey,
Timothy Dalton (One of the great James bonds'),
That Actor guy...the one who did silence of the lambs!
Bryn Terfel,
Kylie Minogue has a grandma in South Wales!

I'm sure there are more!

I suppose we need a definition of what is a contemporary Welsh person. Is it
people who were born in Wales? live in Wales? speak Welsh? had a distant
relative who came from Wales? "of Welsh descent"? moved to live in Wales
during childhood but then moved away again? And does their accomplishment
have to be recognised outside Wales for it to count - or do people who are
'just famous' within their own country count (because in some cases their
accomplishment/contribution has been phenomenal)?

Nothing as exotic as that I'm afraid Bryan. Leslie Neilsen was the bloke
who swindled Barrings Bank, the UK's oldest merchant bank, out of millions
in 1996 by running up huge losses on the Far East stock markets. He fled
Singapore and was arrested by the Germans in Frankfurt and extradited back
to Singapore where he was sentenced to six years for fraud etc.

Barrings collapsed and was bought out for £1 by the Dutch banking company,
ING and tonight's C4 news reports that Leslie Neilsen been admitted to
hospital suffering from colan and bowel cancer (the bloke is in his mid
30s). Incidentally, one of my colleagues at work her uncle was Neilsen's
boss at Barrings in Singapore, and the whole family is waiting with keen
interest to see who will portray him in the forthcoming Hollywood
blockbuster!!

Sorry guys!!! Talking out of my arse there!! I was thinking of Nick Leeson
and I got him confused with the white haired chap who starred along OJ
Simpson in the Naked Gun films!!!

Spot on, Bryan. He's a very funny bloke, and until now I had no idea
that he has Welsh connections! You learn something new every day around here!

Unfortunately, your correct response was followed by this load of tripe ....

DUH! I think you might find that this was Nick Leeson - different
name, different nationality, about half Leslie Neilsen's age, looks
completely different, but apart from that I can see how you confused
the two. NOT.

Bloody hell Gareth!! Give me some credit!! You're quite right I did
confuse the two, but if you actually read the NG before you posted you will
have noticed that I corrected myself in my message timed at 22.50 (30 mins
after my original post) and your message was posted at 00.48.

Unlike others when I make an arse of things I own up to it!!

Yup, I put my hands up to that little cock-up! I think that I must
have downloaded a news packet sometime between your two posts, and
then got your second one when I dialled in next (which is when my
premature reply was uploaded)! That's what happens when you work with
news off-line!

SORRY! :)
