The origin of "Llan"

The celtic saints and early missionaries who were spreading the
new gospel of Christianity among
the heathen Welsh tribes, (St David et al) set up compounds of monks on
their journeys as the travelled
These cloisters they called Llans. You can followthe travels of St Davids
journeys and settlements of Llans if you follow,on a map, the river Towy
upstream. Cloisters were set up at: Llandeilo.Llangadoc,Landovery,
Llandrindod etc.. etc. Central to the cloister was the church and the name
Llan was corrupted to mean the church rather than the settlement.

thought eglwys was the actual church and Llan was its "parish";o)
