Can anyone recommend a reliable decorator and a joiner/carpenter for
forthcoming DIY work in the house in the Sleaford/Lincoln area? Time and
Health problems limit our ability to do these so looking for tradesmen to
undertake the work. I've tried Yellow Pages but all that came weren't
interested or didn't bother getting back to us. I think it is because some
of the jobs are small such as hanging new doors in the house but we also
want pipes boxing in etc so there is other work available. Just think some
want 'mega buck' jobs only.

Any recs gratefully received.

Thanks.

No, this is not the reason. There is a general lack of tradesmen, due to
proper apprenticeships being done away with years ago. There are no 'up and
coming' tradesmen to replace those retiring. Those tradesmen that are
around are usually working on all the new housing estates that are being
thrown up everywhere - regular hours, regular pay, far less liability.
We're doing a total renovation project on our house (it's literally 4 walls
and a roof at the moment) and it took us 12 months to find a builder, even
though we offered to pay cash!!!!

Sorry but I can't help you at all. Maybe someone else can. Good luck :o))

I have a bloke coming on Wednesday to lay a patio and do some exterior
painting.

I know he has a lot on at present but will show him your two posts. I do
know he is very good decorator and odd job man. He charges reasonable
prices.

Rather than wait till Wednesday I have emailed both your posts to him.
.. to see if he can squeeze you in. As I say though he is flat out at
moment.

Unless fashions have changed again since last I spoke with relatives in
the trade, many of those time served tradesmen probably don't even have
that now. AIUI, firms who used to employ (and train) tradesmen often use
sub-contractors instead nowadays. Those sub-contractors may well be the
same people the firms used to employ, but without the 'regular hours,
regular pay, far less liability'.
