Morning all,

Following on from the post last month about dodgy fascia companies in
the area, there is also a dodgy kitchen fitting firm too :(

Two years ago I had a 'phone call from a firm that installs fitted
kitchens.

'Congratulations, you have been chosen to be our new show house in
your area!'

OK, sounded dodgy but I invited them round anyway.

One guy came round, showed different styles etc, brought in a little
kitchen unit on wheels from his van to show the quality of the gear
(which did look like a decent bit of kit I must admit) and then
measured up and designed a kitchen for me.

Oddly enough, the design looked exactly like my existing kitchen..

We then got to talking about cost. A few calculations, and he came up
with £7500. After seeing the look on my face, he rang his office and
spoke to his boss, then came up with £4500 which had to be agreed on
there and then.

Part of the deal was allowing him to bring people into my house - at
least 2 a month.

I 'had a think about it' whilst he put his stuff back in his van and
declined his kind offer. He took his design away, as according to
him, I could sell it and make some money. (?)

Last year, the firm was on Watchdog for installing overpriced crap
kitchens with extortionate finance deals, and the kitchens were
falling to bits, not screwed together properly, worktops just sat on
top of units, units not mounted on the wall properly, wall units
falling out of the wall and so on.

Last week, the same firm rang me again.

'Congratualtions, you have been chosen to be our new show house in
your area!'

I asked them how they had the nerve to ask me a second time if they
could install a kitchen that was overpriced with a fairly hard sell
that was slated on watchdog, to which the reply was 'Sorry Sir, we'll
update our system to ake you off our database - but you won't be able
to receive any more of our great deals and promotions'.

*sigh*

If you get any 'phone calls like this, just say 'No' :)

Bad form to follow up the same post, but I negelcted to include the

Who would be daft enough to buy anything from a company that has to cold
call you? Would you take up any of the exciting offers which fall into your
email in tray (spam)??
I usually either say "hang on I will go and fetch the person you need to
speak to" and just leave the phone on the side, going back every so often to
say "she is just coming, I,m sure she will be interested", or I hold the
receiver to the biggest dog's gob and tell her to "speak" hehe.

Would you or do you buy Avon, Betterware or give money to any of the
charities that stick leaflets and envelopes through the door?

Same methods of selling - you are not asking for these things, someone
is going out of their way to make you notice them by sticking them
through the letterbox or ringing you at home.

Actually I don,t buy on the doorstep ever.
If I want to buy something I will either go to a shop, or look online or
make phone calls in my own time, at my own pace.I am very resentful of
anyone invading my time and space trying to solicit business. I have
explained how I deal with unwanted telephone calls, personal caller are
liable to be sent off with some anglo saxon language and the offer of
letting the dogs assist them off my property.
I consider it very very rude of anyone to interupt me at home whatever time
of day or evening. In my mind it's like buttiing in on a conversation.

Heh, well perhaps you are, and I can see your point.

My father registered with these people a few months ago, and all his calls
dried up. He was also of the opinion that he shouldn't need to register not
to be disturbed, and he's pretty ruthless on the 'phone when he wants to be
. . . but eventually he grew tired of it . . . bosh. Job done.

On the odd occasions I get one of these calls I ask who is calling
telling them of my charge and that the call is being recorded for
evidence - they don't seem to stay on line very long. :-)

Entirely your choice but a few large fines would stop these cowboys in their
tracks...

:-)

Do you suppose you could really bill them for it?

Lack of consideration etc....?

Nothing short of assault possibly?

I am very against cold calling and the like but I think there are ways of
dealing with it!

Without wishing to sound like I'm defending cold calling may I put a
question to you?

If someone phoned you up and you blew a whistle at them causing damage do
you really think you would escape criminal or civil action?

if someone calls me when I am in the middle of my dog whistle blowing
practise, that is hardly my fault is it??? And if they call me and my dog
barks, how is that my fault??
Stop being so damned PC. If some wazzock disturbs me at my home then they
deserve whatever they get. Hmm actually just thought, if I get cold called
and trip in my rush to get to the phone can I sue them???

So if someone comes to my door...maybe postman pat with a letter and I stab
hum because I'm in the middle of door stabbing practice can I escape
trouble?

I don't think I'm being PC I am just attempting to open the discussion up
slightly...we all hate cold calling but causing injury surely goes beyond
the pale!

you do door stabbing practise?? Why? And how do you do it with an open door?
How does that relate to me practising whistles for training my dogs?

I'm sure you appreciate that I hate cold callers as much as you do...perhaps
I just prefer a more clearly legal approach!
