Possibly one of the greatest local newspaper headlines of all time - but is
any of it true?

Devil worshippers and their sick sacrifices

SATANISTS have claimed an isolated church in a lonely field near Louth.

St Botolph's Church in Skidbrooke has been redundant since 1973 and stands
in trees, more than a mile from Saltfleet Haven. The majestic 13th century
church stands like an enormous medieval great hall.

But devil worshippers have moved in, marking pillars with black signs and
evidence suggests sheep and poultry have been sacrificed.

Church warden Ralph Benton, 65, from Church Lane, said: "Satan worshipping
has gone on. They come from Grimsby in the evenings, light fires and write
symbols on the walls.

"I have gone to the church at three in the morning to try to move them on,
but they swear at me so I don't like to go. I might get knifed."

St Botolph's is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust and the
nearest house is roughly half a mile away. The building's once magnificent
interior has now fallen into disrepair and its former alter has been painted
black. On its side, 'Carla and Amy sacrificed here,' has been written.

One Skidbrook resident, who asked not to be named, said headless sheep and
cockerels had been found nearby. She said: "Sometimes as many as 10 cars are
parked outside St Botolph's, often more at Halloween."

Geoff Wilson, from Wine Lane, said: "They put down stones, painted with
names and signs, in a circle in the middle of the floor. It's a witches
coven."

Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Nature Reserve wildlife officer John Walker said
he had found a headless chicken in a car park at nearby Rimac last week.

He said: "They use Rimac because of the close proximity of the redundant
church and the abundance of elder, which has links to Satanism."

But Louth rector Canon Steven Holdaway gave strong warnings. He said: "It's
very dangerous and these people are becoming involved in things outside
their control. Satantic rituals and black magic are things to keep away
from.

"People feel in some strange way it will give them power, but the further
one goes into it, the further one gets trapped."

The church has been locked up since the Leader began investigating this
story.

CHURCH 'NOT UNDER THREAT'

10:30 - 19 January 2004

Reports that a historic church could be demolished because it is being used
for satanic rituals have been denied by conservation workers.

The Churches Conservation Trust has confirmed there are no plans to flatten
the Grade 1-listed St Botolph's Church, at Skidbrooke, near Louth - despite
suggestions that the church's future could be under threat.

Trust field officer Tim Charlson said rumours circulating in the county were
"utter nonsense" and that no instances of devil-worship had been reported in
recent years.

Seems they are confused too. Satanism and witchcraft are 2 different things
entirely.

Perhaps we should organise a newsgroup picnic up there sometime.

Ah yes, because no-one's ever got sucked into the Christian church and
believed they receive 'power' from something invisible and omnipresent, have
they? ;-)
