Can anyone remember a shop called 'Blades' in Grimsby ?

I believe it was once in the old Bull Ring and then moved after the 60s/70s.

Where was the shop located before it closed ?

Anyone remember ?

Thank You

I think you will find it ended up in Hainton Ave, and closed many years ago.

Thanks, I know it closed a long while ago.
My father-in-law knew the guy who owned it (he has since passed away)

But although I remember the shop (I was only young at the time) I can't
remember where it was or what it sold.

Was it a hardware shop ?

Yes, "Blades" was a hardware / ironmongers, I seem to recall it also used to
be
on the corner of Pasture Street and Victoria Street, {now an amusement
arcade}
opposite what was then Siddles tools shop, now Allenby Stevensons.
Their was another hardware/DIY shop at Riby Square called "Boltons"
and one down Freeman street called " ? " <-- HELP with the name PLEASE!
which looked just like the shop in the Two Ronnies "4 Candles" sketch.

Bloody Hell !

A blast from the past.

I remember Dobsons.

They had hundreds of little drawers with everything imaginable in them.

From tap washers to paraffin heater wicks..............

The good old days - I'm showing my age now. Don't things change ?

I remember Blades in the Bull Ring very well. My father had a shop in
Killingholme and I worked in Grimsby so if anything was ever wanted from
Blades (Who sold things wholesale to) I used to pick them up in my dinner
hour.

Also Tates had a little shop up the alleyway at the side of Blades.

Thinking of hardwear shops can anyone remember that one in Corporation Road
brilliant shop was near here is another one for you the Quacks shop cant
remember his name either but you could go in for all sorts of old fashioned
medication.
Heres a few more to make you think

Dolly's Lollies Ellsenham Road . Worked at Dixons Paper Mill and used to
get Coke with Ice cream in from there
Hewitts Brewery
Ticklers Jam
Davis's Electrical Oxford Street
Clockie Wards the Jeweller s - Victoria Street - Corporation Road - Grimsby
Road
I could go on for ever but Im begining to show my age

I think the Coporation Road Hardware shop was run by a Mr Gorbutt a
real helpful bloke with a hair lip.
Dollies Lollies :) are my Aunt & Uncle, Dolly & Bob,
they are both fit and well. but don't make 'goffers' or "specials" anymore.
Do you remember Ada's Ices (Dollies sister.)
Ticklers Jam factory in Sheepfold / Pasture Street area.

Do remember Ada's Ices I was convinced it was not as good as Dollies but I
bet they were the same recipe
Id forgotton the we called the coke and icecream specials.
Glad to here Dolly and Bob both fit and well. After I left Dixons I used to
take my kids to Dollies whenever we came into Grimsby Shopping it was the
highlight of the trip for them.

No not the same recipe, Dollies was a very sweet white ice cream
I recall Ada's was more of a yellow colour,
I have asked about the recipe for years but all they say is
"it's not what it's made from but the way it's made"
They often talk about their old customers,
Bob or Mr Dolly as he was known, still walk's about town saying
hello to what appears to be every other person in the street,
and can remember most of them certainly by sight
if not always by name,

Goodness me I've started something here !

Dollys Ices .......

Ada's Ice's........

I used to live 'over the marsh'.

Went to Littlecoates school and I can just remember Dixons paper mill.

I lived down Watkin street - which is still there but the houses are long
since gone.
Bought by the council (compulsary puchase order - I think).

Can anyone remember the public baths near the old hospital ?

My dad used to take me there for a scrub - LOL.

Happy days eh ?

Cheers

minky

No - I can't remember them.

I can barely remember the Bull Ring as it used to be.

That aside - can you remember the old underground passageway that used to
take you under the railway line near where Asda's is now ?
