I see this all over an old map (16th C.) of Lincolnshire and wondered?
Also Wapon and 'Tak' (sic) on their own or together.

"Wapentake is a Danish word equivalent to the word hundred that is
used in other parts of the country to denote a subdivision of the
county composed of groups of townships for the purpose of taxation.
"

Quoted from Rex Needle's excellent "Bourne in words & pictures" page
(which I found very quickly at <http://www.TheLincolnshireSite.com>!!)

It also refers to a method of voting by brandishing one's weapon (as in
'sword'. Just thought I'd clarify that before anyone gets any silly
ideas <g> )

Best wishes,

And the word has its origins pretty much in what it sounds like, from
the Norse/Danish influence on this part of the world. Read something
such as "Njal's Saga" or "Laxdaela Saga" for descriptions of how that
culture met to settle disputes, hopefully without outright war.
