Send an e-mail to ab...@theplanet.net, which contains /all/ of the headers
of the message, and also write a few paragraphs registering discontent
with what this customer of theirs has done.
Add a few sentences about mental suffering caused by whoever posted it for
comedy value.
Wait.
Wonder why you don't get a reply, and wonder then how long it'll take before
people like him spoil Netnews for all.

The he'd just register with Freeserve I suppose (sigh)
BTW, I once complained to Freeserve about one of their subscribers trading
kiddie porn on Netmeeting. Never got a response from FS, although the
culprit seemed to disappear. To the Scrubs with a bit of luck.

not always, e.g. Demon, Compu$erve and Excite would take it seriously
and investigate, in my experience. All three reported back. One problem
is that headers can sometimes be forged. So if it looks as though it
came from som...@excite.com, it may actually have originated from
elsewhere. However I've had a user kicked off CompuServe before now,
because of the grossly offensive nature of some unsolicited E-mails.
Demon have a strict acceptable use policy too, both for news and Email.

Freeserve act on abuse reports. Since they insist on subscribers releasing
CLI, they can go further than some ISPs and not only close an account, but
also refuse to create a new account for someone using a modem connected to
the same line as a closed account.

Hence the importance of submitting the full message, with all headers: the
"path" header helps track down the real ISP when other headers are forged.
It's also a good idea, unless you've enough experience to rule out header
forgery, to introduce your polite complaint by saying that the sender
"appears" to have an account with the ISP you're complaining to.

It was a similar circumstance when I made a complaint. Some things are so
gross as to be clearly in breach of the ISP's Acceptable Use Policy: for
other things, it's a matter of judgement for the ISP. Just because a
complainer finds something unacceptable doesn't mean the ISP has to.
Freeserve's terms of use are at URL: http://www.freeserve.net/terms/
(Apologies to anyone who saw a quoted copy of Alan's posting, with no
additions, from me: it means your ISP is not honouring a cancel request. I
had a problem with Outlook Express, but issued a cancel message when I
realised what had happened.)

This is not what I meant! Flaming ISPs will do no good whatsoever.

Perhaps I should make myself clear, by flaming the ISP I should have said
flaming the sender, which would bring it to the attention of the ISP, (large
number of posting to a particular mailbox). Flame wars are only worthwhile
if the problem is persistent and offensive to NG readers and should be a
last resort. This is one of the more pleasant newsgroups to visit, and lets
hope it stays that way. I am encouraged by the reaction to my first posting
that the good guys are still alive and well in here!
Hope that clears that one up!
