... have appeared in the last coupla weeks on the Lower Luton Road (or Lower
Harpenden Road if you happen to be coming in the other direction!). The
shape and casings look like "ordinary" CCTV cameras, but they are sited very
close to the Gatsos and appear to be focused on the beginning of the
speed-measuring markings on the road. Does anybody know the purpose of
these new spying devices?

To increase revenue while having virtually no impact on accident rates.

The Gatsos are already there for that. Why the new ones?

New digital cameras are beginning to replace traditional Gatsos. Maybe,
that's what is happening here?

Thanks Ian, you could well be right, but it's still odd how the cameras
point down at a steep angle onto the beginning of the road markings. I
boggle at the last paragraph of the article found by the link you posted.
They crow about the reduction in casualties at the camera sites, but don't
report how many uninsured / drunk drivers are whizzing around in
unroadworthy vehicles because the cameras have replaced live Traffic
officers on the roads ...

Funny you should mention that, as it's a personal hate of mine too.

My fence was demolished in the early hours of this morning by a car
coming off at the bend. That's the 5th time in 6 years! The driver had
buggered off by the time the police arrived, although I'm told 'an
arrest was later made'. I'm waiting for the police to give me the
driver's details and hope that he or she was insured, as two of the last
four weren't. BTW, the previous 4 were all successfully prosecuted for
drink-driving, obviously I don't know about this one yet.

So yes, I really do wish there were more traffic cops out there and less
reliance on cameras.

They forget to mention that taffic & congestion has increased so much since
2002 that now most of the time nothing can move fast enough to cause a death
or serious injury!
