Ooooops,
Just ran Andover through the search and it threw them back.
Never thought it would find others in Scotland, especially after narrowing
the search to Hampshire first !
Silly me.
Oh, and yes, it was the REAL me !!!

I doubt very much that this limited list will help you Joyce, but really
hope it does.

Good luck.

Hi Joyce

My first school was the East St Infants school. That wasn't a C of E
school. It was for 5+ Year olds.

The Andover Grammar was for 11+ - and you had to pass an entrance
exam in the '30s.

The Secondary Modern Schools in London Road were also for 11+ - one
boys, one girls. They look like '30's style buildings.

Your description of going up hill to the church, and all the steps
suggests the Norman Gate School which was very close to the church.

I'll describe what would have been your route to the Norman Gate to
see if it rings a bell.

To get to it from the Weyhill Road, you'd go towards Town. Over the
railway bridge and down hill. Near the bottom, there'd be a cinema
on your left at a road Junction (Junction Road) A bit farther on was
Andover Town Railway station. This would have been on your right
with a level crossing which you'd have to cross (and perhaps wait for
trains). You then went along Bridge Street. There is a bridge over
the River Anton and the Town Mill on your left there. A bit farther
on, you get to a staggered crossroads.

To go up to the church, you'd turn left there into the High Street.
This widens out with shops on both sides. In front of you, you'd see
the Guildhall, an imposing grey building across the widest part of
the street with Woolworths on the right hand side almost opposite.
Going the shortest way to the church, you'd go to the right of the
Guildhall into the upper High Street with more shops, including Marks
& Spencer on the right. At the end, there was a road junction to the
right. You'd carry staight on.

In this short section of road was a fish & chip shop on the left, and
a newsagent/sweet shop on the right, then a cafe on the right,
finally the grey stone steps up to the church on the right.

The church would have been straight in front of you at the top of the
steps, with a vicarage on the left. I don't remember the School, but
I'm fairly sure it's gone now.

Oppostie the steps was Chantry Street, a steep hill going down, and
possibly a route you went sometimes for a change. Going away from
the church, there was a pub on the left, a newsagents on the right, a
cuncil yard on the right at the bottom of the hill. Goin on the
level to the town centre, There was, I think, a dairy on the left,
some way along. Then on the right, just before the centre, was the
Rex cinema. You arrived again in the High street with the Guidhall
on your left.

I'll be there on Saturday & will check a bit.

If any of that rings a bell, contact me:

Coo, it's changed now. I can remember the level crossing being there (just).
I think it went in the mid to late 60's. Mind you, I haven't been anywhere
near Andover for several years now......

Ah, the joys, Area 2, Area 8, Area 13...... Dunnings builders everywhere
during the GLC rehousing......

Yes, the branch line to Soton went under Beeching's axe in mid '60s,
then they rebuilt the town centre, killing the Rex. They put a
bypass road where the railway line was, cut London Road twice and
built an overpass over South Street. Andover Grammar's being knocked
down and houses being built.

They chopped the Daisy Dell in half to build the ring road, thus
losing one of the best places for a bit of how's yer father.

And the latest insult is to rename the Folly Inn.

That's the trouble these days, nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

An update:

The current Norman Gate School is a special school (autistic &
Asperger's syndrome) and is in Vigo road, Andover - some way from the
Church. See:

http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/beaconschools/normanga/?version=1

Note that 'The Norman Gate' is an archway near the church and the
original school was named after it, as was a nearby cafe (now a
chinese restaurant).

The only C of E school in the middle of Andover now is:

DFE Number: 3004 Area: 7
Name: Andover C E Primary School
Headteacher: Mr G Mccann
Address: East Street
: Andover
:
Postcode: SP10 1EP
Telephone: 01264 352322
FAX Number: 01264 352322

They may be able to provide some information.

Monxton Rd r/a! Let's see, then there was the Linga Longa, and I recollect
