HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had problems with 2 cowboy plumbers recently, one left me with a
flood for 120 pounds, and the other fixed the first problem and gave me
a few others for another 85 pounds!

Major problem is a very noisy ball valve in the toilet, which is gunged
up with lime scale (it whistles, which annoys my neighbour). Plus all
the taps need to have their seats reground, and the CORRECT size washers
fitted, which is one of the problems the second cowboy left me with. I
was able to fix one tap, but as he managed to seize up my stop cock I
cannot do the rest.

Current prices from yellow pages plumbers range from 3 visits at 80
pounds a visit plus labour and parts costs, to several thousand to
replace the toilet, plumbing and stack pipes.

Before my serious accident I could do those simple tasks..........

There has to be one honest worker in the vast city of
Norwich!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ask around friends/family/neighbours. It's the best way.

The bigger question here I think is

Has there EVER been an honest plumber ?

:o)

No seriously, I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but if ever a
industry was tainted by cowboys it's got to be Plumming (or IT)

Its there any trade omnibudsman or certification that consumers can look
out for ?

Replace with a *silent* ball-valve. Cost from £6 - £15. 10 minute job.

> Plus all the taps need to have their seats reground

Which would imply that they are all rather old. So replacing them
would probably be more economical. To replace a pair of basin taps
should take about an hour, perhaps longer if there is a problem of access.
There are flexible tap connectors available which make the job even easier.

> he managed to seize up my stop cock

Essential that it is replaced. (£5) Half an hour. Only problem could be
turning
off the mains. If no stopcock in street, use a freezer pack (c.£10).

As a general rule... premium advertising outlets attract premium-priced
services. So don't use them if you don't want to pay high prices.
Personal recommendation/word of mouth is preferable. If you are
new to the area you could always telephone the Citizens Advice
Bureau or other community-based organisation.

Good advice, but.............

I always did my own plumbing until I was involved in a very serious
accident, when I broke my left leg and my neck........ Neither problem
was picked up in the Norfolk and Norwich hospital...... I went around
for 3 months in agony before a locum GP diagnosed my problems.......

I am now repaired, but have lost most of the use of my hands..........

I have, actually, found a plumber who is very busy, and will fix my
problems late April........... :-))

Let me give you a word of advice regarding the stop cock. It is vital that
this is replaced in case you get a leak.
There should be another stop valve under a small square access trap in your
front path or something like that depending on your property type.
Make sure you can turn this off in order to change your stop valve indoors.
If you can't turn it off, contact your water Co and get them to change it,
then you can change yours. If the outside one is seized, and you shear it
off, the water co will charge you for it. Let them shear it off.

Also, the water company should NOT charge you for turning it off in the
street. Arrange with them a time during normal working hours to turn it off,
and also a later time to turn it back on (say 4 hours later to cover most
eventualities). If you aren't going to be ready for the second appointment,
make sure you notify them in advance, otherwise you will be charged for the
wasted visit.

If I knew what happened there, I would have stopped it. I've tried to cancel
them all, but don't think that worked either. Got a feeling the cancels went
three or four times themselves.

Sorry about that.

I found one, but he was in Manchester, which isn't much use to the
