Can anyone help?
I am trying to locate photos and/or information on
Barepot especially Concrete row. My step father's family lived there
for many years and were known by the surname of Tinnion. If anyone has
any photos from the last century it would be really helpful if you
could email me them or even copies of any information I would be
greatly indebted to you. He has always shown a strong interest in the
history of barepot and the people and so I have decided to try and
search on the internet. I look forward to any communications on this
and thank you in advance for any effort large or small towards helping
me, many thanks Andy.

I'm sure our Edith will have something to say about this, Andy, as she
grew up on Workington, but she's on holiday just now. Come back next
week and see what she says!

Hi June

Is Barepot an old mill by the river??

Many years ago when the steelworks was still going, an old friend of
mine, together with a bunch of his workmates, used to rent a large
property by the river, which I think was called Barepot Mill.

They use to throw lots of wild parties - I believe they still talk
about them in Workington - which became so popular they became a
strict "ticket only" do. I went to a couple of them, one time being
Easter I arrived riding on a donkey I had found in a field on the way
- it seemed symbolic somehow. I can't remember what happened to the
donkey.

I lost touch with this old friend some time ago - the last I heard he
was a director at Ferranti, but I don't suppose he mentions that much
nowadays!!!! 8^)

Regards

John Hodgson, Jack Greener, Allan Harrison from Dearham, Gordon
Lancaster (I think surname correct), Len Ferguson, Ernie (forget surname
but was once a footballer for Workington Reds) etc, etc. Loved every
minute of working there. Great fun and great friends. Left Jan 1969 for
'down south'. So wrapped up in being newly married that I lost contact
with all of them. Allan was especially a good friend. Pity.

Kept in contact with school friends, but:))

I used to ratch about Barepot when I was a kid and I remember Concrete
Row. If I remember correctly, there was a girl I was at school with
called Carol McCallister who lived there (early 1970's). I remember
nosing about in the old St. Helens Colliery pumping station alongside
the River Derwent, which was demolished about 1976 (the 2' pipe went
from there - up calva bank - and into the old (long-since dried up)
reservoir which still stands on Hawk hill, on the way to Seaton.

I also remember nosing about in the old 'Tin Mission' at the end of
Concrete Row; don't know if it's still there or not.

I used to know a lad called David (Paddy) Riley who would be the same
age as me (44). He lived at barepot in a bungalow which seemd to be
all conservatory. I don't know if the family still lives there.

The only Tinnions I knew live in Infirmary Road, but I don't know if
they are related.

Rather disturbingly, Barepot made the national news recently when the
body of a baby was uncovered in the vicinity of Conrete Row. As I last
heard, It was not known how old the child was, or how long it had lain
there. I believe investigations are still ongoing.
