A relative who was in Bristol in the '60s is sure it used to be
another name, not Dingles.
Anyone know?
Ta,
Paul
Maggs....until the IRA blew it up in 1972...then the undamaged half became
dingles and the rest became Maggs house.

No - Maggs, was an entirely different store, a few doors a way from
Dingles.
Dingles was formerly Brights.

I think Jezza is right about this - a relative used to work for Maggs and
they don't recall any IRA bomb! They do remember something about a fur place
that got attacked though...
Best Regards,
Alex.

The House of Fraser's branch in Plymouth trading under the name of "Dingles"
was set alight and extensively burnt on the night of 19th December 1988. The
arson attack was blamed on Animal Rights Activists, although I am unaware of
anyone being caught and charged with the offence.
HTH
TFW
Fur Place was Micheals Furs and it was on the triangle where the video shop
now is..it was attacked by animal rights persons in the early and mid
1980's.
The IRA bomb exploded down near Sue Sheppard, @1979 .
Animal rights activists caused an explosion in the labs of the university
sometime towards the end of the 80's

Common mistake....you are referring the open space on the other side of the
road bridge directly opposite from the former Muaritania and Harveys Wine
Cellar.
This did occur in 1978/9. Initially (ie for the first two hours of the
Sunday morning in question) the media were inaccuately reporting (how
unusual) a gas explosion in the building that sat here as an IRA
bombing...it did happen to coincide with an IRA bombing campaign.
The building in question was almost totally destroyed by the gas explosion
and subsequent fire at around 7am that Sunday morning. The remaining
structure was pulled down and cleared away later that day as it was in
danger of collapsing onto Park Street and the street below the bridge.
It was then discovered that the cause of the explosion was a fractured gas
main under the building that had been leaking into the basement possibly for
days beforehand. It is beleived that a heating boiler thermostat clicking on
in the shop unit on the ground floor (Park Street side) ignited the gas that
had by then filled the entire basement and was leaking through the
floorboards of the shop unit.
Most of the buildings at the bottom of Park Street lost their windows and a
couple sleeping in their bedroom in the flat above the Harveys wine cellars
opposite were blown out of bed and showered with broken glass and rubble but
escaped unscathed if shaken. The Council house was lightly damaged by both
the shockwave and flying debris losing a few windows on the Park Street side
of the building.
The building that went up was fortunately empty at the time. Though the fire
brigade spent most of the morning after they put the blaze out searching the
rubble for a woman who was known to occupy one of the two flats there but
she had in fact gone away for the weekend...luckily for her...and stopped
when she turned up in a taxi from Temple Meads station. Needless to say she
had lost absolutely everything.she possessed that wasn't in her overnight
bag.

I stand corrected about Dingles. However Maggs was targeted and partially
destroyed by the IRA.
V.interesting.
Is the Harveys wine store the place that's now called Averys then?

You know what to do...
Why? What were the IRA doing in Bristol?
Wow, wonder if it was because of Sue's window displays.......... I
particularly liked the one of all the ladies in bathing costumes. Can
anyone remember that one, from 1999 I think..........? Lots of blue and red
stripes......
Bombing it. Haven't you been paying attention?
Oh sorry, to the back of the class and face the wall?
I thought the University bomb was in the Senate building. Perhaps that
was something else.
There was also a guy whose car was car-bombed by animal rights people,
on Cotham Road, near the top of St Michael's Hill. That was probably the
late 80s also.

There certainly was a bomb there.

His 18 month-old infant was in the car at the time. Bloody ALF.
