--Hi brian. Filled in some of the spots with more marked *. I believe
there may be a book written fairly recently about all the Birmingham
Cinemas. Andy M might know about this. I have wonderful memories of the
Plaza,(matinee local mostly) Star,Erdington Pic.House, Pavilion, Wylde
Green, Palace, Mayfair, Clifton, Shirley, Odeon, Beaufort, Sheldon and
many others. I just wish I had asked for those posters and photos that
were posted outside the theatres. They are selling for a fortune these
days to collectors.

Good list Jenny, I've been in most of those at some time, although I
can't place the Apollo, Wylde Green, Star, Astoria or the Castle
Bromwich. Where on the Tyburn road was the Appolo. Lived in Erdington
from 63 for a couple of years and from 70 to 84 but can't place it at
all. I suppose my most frequented ones would be the Lyric..memories of
Saturday matinees and a few good fights as a youngster. It was 3 old
pence downstairs and 4.5 pence upstairs. The Palladium, Orient, Palace,
Villa Cross, Picture House-Aston Cross, Edgebaston, Newtown and the
Grove. I never went to the Pavillion Wylde Green as a picture house, but
did go when it was a bowling alley. I wish I could get an old
Evening Mail from the 50's just to see how many we missed. There are a
few books in Erdington Library, but I don't recall them being that
comprehensitive.

Think you're right Harry. I only remember going in one Picture house
around Perry Barr and I think it was along the Walsall Road, some way on
from the Tennis Courts Pub.

I'm sure it was the Princess, but could be wrong..perhaps someone from
the Smethwick area could put us right.

Not sure..definately not the Stockland as I stated though..

Most of them do Harry..any particular memories from the Villa Cross?

I'm also trying to remember the name of a particular flea pit that was
in Ledsam Street, Ladywood..may have actually been called the Ledsam,
but I'm not too certain. Some good old memories from most of those old
Picture Houses though Harry.

Well, you could argue it was Tower Hill, but those of us who live(d) in
the area would never consider that as Perry Barr - where do you think
the boundary between the two was, then?

It carried two names during its lifetime, one of which was indeed the
Ledsam.

Originally it was a cartoon theatre - non-stop animations - but as the years
went by it progressed to showing movies with 'adult' themes (sometime around
the late 70s). From what I recall, it was named the Jacey after the original
owner's initials John? Cohen (JC).

There's certainly a copy in Hamstead Hall library, I borrowed it a month
or two back - I expect there are more copies in the system as a whole.
Your local library should be able to get it on Inter-Library loan.
