Or simply avoid chain fish and chip shops and patronise your local
family-run chippy instead! Far better in most cases.
MM
OK I checked.
It seems that after the chain sold out in 1988, to a former KFC boss,
out went beef dripping and in came vegetable oil.
Also, fresh fish went out as well, they now cook frozen fish.
So, sounds crap basically.
We haven’t got one in Birmingham anymore.
The Birmingham outlet happened (maybe deliberately) to open less than
a mile away from a chippy that already had its own world famous
reputation. Having been featured in newspapers across the world and on
Letterman’s show, when it was filmed for a week in the UK.
It was more than good enough to see off Ramsdens, despite its beef
dripping, they gave up on the location, it’s a MacDonalds now.
You are saying that it sells nothing but S**T now.

dont worry he's Scottish and Italian....
Presumably, though, if it is described as "haddock" or "cod"
then it really is haddock or cod?
Francis
nono....its an islamist conspiracy...or was it jewish.....anyway,
always order haddock cos the cod has been sitting there for a while....
That cod piece in the Times which turned out to be a load
of Vietnamese cobblers? Yes, I remember that now.

Stopped using HRs around that time (late 80s) as the quality nose-dived.
How can you have proper Yorkshire fish & chips unless they're fried in beef
dripping?
John.

The best in Yorkshire in recent years:
Wetherby Whaler
Thompsons in Wetwang
John.
Yep, those are the kinds of chippy I was thinking of!
MM
It's the lack of wrapping in newsprint* that puts me off, somehow
cardboard boxes and polystyrene just isn't the same as unwrapping and
paper package. And don't forget the scraps

*newsprint is the type of paper
Bod
I've never tasted a curry cooked by a white man that has been anything
like edible.
Not if you're trying to flog 'em in West Yorkshire...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.
No, Harry Ramsden's sold by British people to Pakis.
Newspaper generally has print on it, newsprint doesn't

How could it have nosed dived from bad?
Dave
The cardboard and polystyrene wrapping do not let the steam out and you
end up with soggy chips and batter. Yeuck.
Dave
Where on earth do we get people bright enough to use a computer but so bone
ignorant that they can't tell a Hindu name from a Muslim one?
Apparently you can teach a chimpanzee to use a computer, so it's
hardly surprising.

Wrong, but then I wouldn't expect anything more from a lot on this group.
He's of Indian origin.
> Halal fish anyone?
He's a Hindu, and fish is Halal anyway.
Mike P
It's being renamed to Harry Ramadan's :O)
Yes I was in there in the late 60s and it was good. In the early 90s I was
in there and it was horrible. I reckon that there is only one way from the
bottom and that is upwards.
That is of course provided that this paki can cook and keeps them lousy so
called paki and indian dishes off the menu.

Dave
Why does it matter? All fish is halal anyway.
Bearing in mind that a whale is actually not a fish (it
is an insect).
Francis
Dave
I should think a fish being killed with its throat cut dies a lot quicker
than letting it suffocate.
hahaha
They've been 'halal' for years.
One of the major selling points at their main outlet is that fish and meat
products are always fried in seperate fryers and that they fry only in
vegetable oil.
I thought their main selling point was that they only fry in beef
dripping.
Which may present a rather interesting culture clash for the new owner.
Then you'd be dead wrong.

I suspect most use oil these days which would account for the crap fish
suppers that are around, I'll lucky, my local chippy used beef dripping,
mind you it's not a chap meal anymore.

Fish is halal. You don't have to do anything special to it.

That was a matter of time. The last time I attempted to eat at a Ramsden's I
was handed the worst plate of chips, and possibly the worst fast food, I
have had anywhere.. and that includes Little-Thief service stations...
I'm sure the badly bruised, half-cooked, pallid excuses for chips that
lightly adorned the plate couldn't legally have been fed to a dog, but that
didn't stop the proprietors from having the gall to sell them to naive fools
who had entered their establishment expecting to be served food.
Give me a Chicken Madras any day

Ranjit Boparan is an Indian/Hindu name, arsewipe.
Which is hardly a selling point. The best F&C are *always* fried in
beef dripping.
Around here, they all seem to be fried in palm oil, which is not only
disgusting, but unhealthy and contributes to the massive destruction of
rainforest in Indonesia. Maybe the government should ban palm oil!

So the solution is clear, throw the entire family out of the UK - and seize
the 170 million to give to the injured child.

And hardly any fish and chip shops do so.
MM
Not up here in Lincs! There are some fantastic fish and chips widely
available and good value, too.
