Methadone baby death parents jailed

The drug-addicted parents of a child who died after drinking their methadone
have been jailed after admitting culpability.

Dylan Thomas Hughes, who was two years and two months old, collapsed at his
south Wales home on May 28 last year and died later in hospital.

His mother and father, Paul Hughes and Krystal Jones, admitted causing or
allowing the death of a child at Newport Crown Court.

They were each prescribed seven bottles of methadone a week in a bid to wean
them off their heroin habits.

Following Dylan's death, police found 76 bottles of methadone in the toddler's
home. Of these, 42 were determined to be within reach of a child.

Prosecutor Robin Spencer QC said of the 76 bottles, 25 were empty but retained
as the methadone dregs "would often be pooled into another vessel".

The pair, of Ogwy Street, Nantymoel, near Bridgend, had admitted causing or
allowing the death of a child during a hearing last month after denying
manslaughter.

They were each sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by the Recorder of Cardiff,
Judge Nicholas Cooke QC.

Hughes was also given a consecutive sentence of four months' imprisonment for
one count of supplying methadone, one count of possessing cannabis and one
count of possessing diazepam while on bail for manslaughter.admitting
culpability.

It happens quite often. I'm not sure who makes the decision to hype up
one such case every so often.
I suppose it's profit driven. If they hyped up every such case, they'd
lose the "exclusive sensational revelation" aspect.

"Possessing diazepam?"
Is that a crime now?

Meanwhile, here is an extract from my son's school report:

End of Year School Report on the child with the 'inappropriately
modelling behaviour' Mother:

Personal and Social Education

Quote:
During the year, X has confidently talked and written about the
following topics; emotions and feelings, healthy and unhealthy, our
Identity, taking turns and likes and dislikes. X has also studied and
clearly recognises what is fair and unfair and what is right and
wrong. X has confidently been able to clearly explain his views and
opinions on these issues and other issues that matter to him.

To which EVERYONE except the SS have said, the child is clearly being
given a structure, a sense of identity, appropriate moral, ethical and
sense of right and wrong....did you ever think Mrs SS that the problem
could be YOU?

(answer: of course not, I am doing society's good in the name of the
child and in his best interests.)

General Comments from the HeadMaster:
X is a fountain of knowledge and both peers and teachers alike enjoy
listening to his interesting talks and are constantly surprised at his
intellectual skills when presenting his reasoning and opinions.

Progress Target for Next Year:
To continue with his excellent progress this year; to begin a gifted
and talented programme in maths. To improve his handwriting to
achieve a SAT level 3 (on teacher assessment) by improving his
handwriting.

My 7 year old achieved level 3 SAT's in Maths and Science. In English
(and all it incorporates) he got a 2B- basically because he is a poor
speller and has terrible handwriting. The SS say because he is LEFT
HANDED, that makes him 'special needs'.

Perhaps Bridgend Council SS should be investigating those who let
their kids drink their methadone substitute instead of parents who
say, 'and I should work with you incompetents....WHY?'

And they still will swear they aren't in 'special measures'! Oh no, we
are improving!

Role on my JR of these idiots!

I can't read everything, but I'm just puzzled as to how "possessing
diazepam" could be a matter for criticism, let alone a criminal
charge.

A prescription drug, which I assume was not prescribed to him.

It's a prescription only medication, so if he didn't have a script it's
covered by something or other.

Over-prescription of diazapam (Valium) led to huge rates of addiction and
serious psychiatric problems.

So, uh, its still a POM and some people are still antsy about it.
