Is it legal to sell whole prawns by the pint?

Depending on the size, you don't get the same weight every time. I
reckon prawns should be sold by weight, but our local fish van still
sells prawns, cockles, whelks and brown shrimps by the pint or
half-pint. I've been wanting to complaint for ages, but don't know
whether I have a case, legally.

Then I've been had! Only a couple of hours ago I bought 650g of frozen
whole prawns from Tesco for 5. But normally I get them from the fish
van, but she didn't come today. And she sells them by the pint.

Have you weighed the amount you get in a pint, perhaps average it over a few
purchases, it could be better value.

According to this website

http://ukma.org.uk/food/unfriendly-practices

Seafood can be sold by either weight or volume, but they should be using
metric not imperial units.

Dig through this little lot for chapter and verse

Prawn or Shrimp prices depend on their size, you cant do a price comparison
without knowing the sizes.

That is what I shall do next Thursday when she'll be back after the
New Year, hopefully. Still, just ate some of the Tesco prawns (needed
to thaw them out for a couple of hours) and they tasted great.

Maybe Tesco have higher overhead costs than some woman who wheels a
wheelbarrow through streets broad and narrow.

The price comparison can be done on weight only, assuming the carapace to

I'd expect the mass of meat to go up with the cue of the linear
dimensions and the mass of carapace to go up by the square. Either way
up you pay a darn lot more for 20 in a kilo prawns than you do for 50 or
100 in a kilo

Assuming the same prawns then yes but without further information on
them you cannot say you were done, it all depends upon whether they are
wild, farmed, cold water, deep water, fresh, frozen, shelled, unshelled,
cooked, raw.......

We are talking about prawns and not cockles and mussels.

There's a good chance they are the same product and supplied by the same
distributor, particularly in the unusual sized 650g bags.

Cooked, whole prawns caught in the North-West Atlantic it says on the
packet. So I'd say, pretty much identical. Not surprising. Tesco is
way more expensive than Asda for food.

This is not my experience.

Asda is the closest major supermarket to me so I sometimes walk there rather
than have to drive to one of the others

I almost never find anything there on my shopping list that is cheaper than
Sainsburys/Tesco

YMMV (well it obviously does)

Depends on what you buy, I suppose. But I'm always amazed that Asda
can sell so cheaply when Tesco often charges two or threepence more
(or even more) for the same products.

I don't buy cook/chill meals very often, but the Asda ones are way
cheaper than Tesco's. Mind you, the other day I bought a pack of Nasi
Goreng in the chiller (not frozen) cabinet at Aldi and it was VERY
tasty. Cooked rice, bits of leek, spring onion, scrambled egg (as per
a typical Nasi Goreng) and lots of cubes of ham. Got three meals out
of the 800g pack which cost 2.49. Just needs three minutes in the
microwave or non-stick pan. Delicious!

Fresh - fruit/veg/meat/fish/bakery. I'll conceded that Asda bakery is a bit
cheaper than Tesco, but the rest is much the same

Small number of branded items that seem to be "price-checked" to the penny
by all the supermarkets, even Waitrose sells them for the same price!

Some own brand items that I am happy with the quality. Having had some bad
experiences with alternative "no name" brands I stick with what I have
tested here (as long as they are a significant discount over the branded
alternative, trialling a new brand for an extra 2p off isn't worth it).
Some items I'll buy Tesco's and not Sainsbury's' and some items it's vv.

I don't buy non-food items [1] in the main supermarkets, I have established
that I get much better value in Aldi/Lidl/Pound shop for such items and as
long as they work who cares what they "taste" like (though smell is
obviously the differentiator here).

tim

[1] except clothes, can't beat "three (coloured) shirts for 10 pound"
anywhere!

And far, far better purchasing power - ask any farmer who supplies Tesco (or
any other supplier, for that matter)

So a little more expensive than the frozen whole prawns from Tesco.
However, the ones from the van are bigger and more meaty.

By the way, I also bought a fresh, dressed crab off the van, never
before having tasted crab or lobster. I thought it was well overrated.
