I have looked on moneysavingexpert and they mention this:
"If you're in the right area, Plusnet’s Value* package is likely to be
the cheapest option at £5.99/month on a 12 month contract. The package
has a 10GB monthly download & upload limit, but this is only enforced
in the daytime hours; you get unlimited downloads from midnight to
8am. Go over the daytime allowance and it'll cost you £2 for 2GB.
The speed is up to 8Mbps, with a free wireless router included (£6.99
p&p), though traffic is quite heavily managed during peak times, so
downloaders should expect to have their speeds strangled in the day.
Online gamers are prioritised so should still find it speedy.
If you're in the 30% of the country that can't get this offer (check
by entering your postcode) you'll only get the first three months at
£5.99, after this it'll set you back £11.99/month, meaning you should
try elsewhere."
As I am paying ADSL24 something like £16 per month, I am now thinking
of going. Any tips please?

I am on ADSL24 for a couple of years now, I find it excellent. Switched
over from Tesco Broadband at the time, this was very restricted.

I have been happy with ADSL24 too. Not so much today though!
How has it been at peak times. MSE warns it can go v slow.?

Am most content with talktalk from Carphone Warehouse. Approx GBP18.00 per
month including phone line rental, free evening & weekend calls to UK land
lines & 32 international destinations, PLUS FREE 'up to 8Mbs' broadband,
free of shaping & download limits (subject to usual fair useage conditions).
Never had a problem in over twelve months, and I generally get a steady 7Mbs
download.
Recommended!
John.
No problems here.
I moved from Tiscali after they started throttling usenet
I was on Plusnet until a couple of years ago but I was paying 21+ for
a capped service and usually went over the limit near the end of the
month so I shifted to BeThere Unlimited for 17 a month and had no
trouble whatsoever with anything ...They don't have a News Server tho'
and not every exchange can provide BE Broadband so check .I'd
certainly recommend them if you can get it .
MSE mentions these people saying they don't have any throttling or
restriction issues. I wonder if anyone has tried them:

How about monitoring your usage so you don't go over the limit? DUMeter
does a fine job for me.
Good idea. The reason I don't check is that the download speed is so
slow here, that I never go anywhere near my limit. I would have
appreciated an automatic email to warm me that over Christmas I was
getting close, but no - they just started throttling. So, I can't
even talk to anyone about it for 3 days as their all off; so I may
throttle them by giving someone else a go who charges less money and
get an unlimited service too!
Turk182
I would also recommend them - excellent customer service (previously rated
equal top with Which?)
Up to 24 Meg connections, depending up proximity to exchange.
No speed problems noticed with different times of day. Absolutely no
problems with upload or download limits or restrictions.
They have changed hands a couple of times since I have been with them, but,
unlike other (originally) smaller companies, they don't seem to have been
messed around with.

Newnet in my personal experience are excellent in terms of quality of
service.
I'm astonished at just how much some of you are paying for broadband. I'm
with Pipex and have twice negotiated a reduced monthly payment after
threatening to move to Sky (which is cheaper still).
I am on a 'up to 8mb' unlimited download package with a 'free anytime'
telephone package included for a grand total of 12.98 per month. Although
Pipex sometimes gets bad press, I have had no problems at all with service.

ADLS24 provides usage stats functions.
>Up to 24 Meg connections, depending up proximity to exchange.
Hmmm...wonder exactly how many folk get anyhting like that speed ?
They do in South Korea and many other 'developed' countries.
I'm up to just over 19 Meg now. When I download some torrents, DU Meter
reports 18+. A full-length film (700+Mb) can take as little as 10 minutes
to download.
Iain
I get an e-mail every day from ADSL24 telling me how much I've used and
how much is left but you have to set it up in the Control Panel once
you've logged onto their site.
I'm on 'upto' 8MB with ADSL24 and my router permanently sync's at 8128.
I'm in the process of moving to the 24MB connection and according to
line checkers I should be able to get around 21MB.
I can't even achieve 1mb - because I'm 3 miles from the City Centre
and BT won't update the line - even so, ADSL24 charge as if were
getting 8mb.
Turk182
You will probably find the same slow connection from any ISP if they use
the same equipment as ADSL24, and the throttling can be dealt with by
keeping an eye on your use. At least ADSL24 didn't cut you off
completely when you exceeded your limit :)
When I was with Tiscali I could only get a max of 1mb despite being
within a Km of the exchange. Get 8mb now
https://www.bethere.co.uk/web/beportal/homepage
Stick your phone number in there and see what they offer
Yep, true. I think I will ask around and see if someone will give me
a reduced rate given that the speed is worse than third world.
Who would I speak to at BT, given that I have no internet account with
them?
Turk182
Have you had a look at the DMT tool. You can adjust your downstream SNR if
that has been set too high, and increase your download speed. However, if
you adjust your SRN too low, you increase the instability.

Sorry I don't know but I would start with ADSL24. The engineer at ADSL
will take a look and see if there is anything they can do to speed
things up and if not a request will be put in to BT for them to take a
look. Do one of the speed checkers first so you have up to date results
to give them.
Good luck
The other thing I don't understand, is that my package, Home 3, claims
to give unlimited off peak downloads. I was never told that if I used
all my peak time usage, my off peak would be throttled and then
disconnected - that is a very different interpretation on 'unlimited'
than the one ADSL24 told me about when I first called them.
I have also noticed that they expect you to pay £8 plus for a top up,
without saying what it will give you in usage. The website is very
poor for this kind of inofrmation.

Turk182
I think I have home 30 from the beginning and just use whatever I feel like.
Never had any extra bills. Home 30 would make a huge difference for you.
ok. I'll take a look. Thanks
Turk182
I would take up with ADSL24 that you're unhappy about being throttled
when there doesn't appear to be anything to show that using your peak
will cut back your off peak use. They may offer something

The site does tell you what you get for your money. Click the Home 30 in
blue and it will display:
Top-up prices are: 10GB: 10.12, 25GB: 24.42, 50GB: 47.92, 75GB:
71.42, 100GB: 93.90 or you can pay 1.23 per GB.
I went on to the enta site and it only gave me one option. It was £8
or so. Thanks. I'll look again.
Turk182
I have visited the entanet site again and the smallest amount they
sell is for £8.61 + vat.
There is no option for buying smaller amounts than 10mb. I only have
a 1mb download speed and the monthy contract ends on the 21st Jan. Do
they carry over the extra purchased until it is all used or will they
clear it out on the 21st.
Please could you send me the link that gave you the top up info.
Many thanks
Turk182
Except we are neither in South K nor a developed country ..
The data speed is mostly because of the distance you are from the exchange.
The ISP has no control over that and their costs are the same regardless of
how far you are from the exchange and what connection speed you achieve.
Their costs are however affected by the amount of data traffic you generate
and in your own case, it seems you have exceeded your monthly quota. So
make sure you know how much traffic you are generating each month and that
the next ISP you use offers a suitable package.
I got the info from the link you posted -
http://adsl24.co.uk/broadband/?showall=yes
click on the blue Home 3 on the left-hand side and it will expand to
show the following info.
"
This package provides a specified usage limit for peak and unlimited
usage off-peak. If you reach your peak usage limit you can simply
purchase additional usage in the form of top-ups which roll over and
never expire, or instead opt to pay per extra 1 GB used.
You can also change packages on a monthly basis should your requirements
change.
Top-up prices are: 10GB: 10.12, 25GB: 24.42, 50GB: 47.92, 75GB:
71.42, 100GB: 93.90 or you can pay 1.23 per GB.

Not to worry, all your broadband problems will soon be solved. The
government is promising fast broadband for all as a legal right:
I've been on FTTB ( Fiber To The Building) here in Finland for 6
months now and it's brilliant. I get a speed of 30 meg down and 10 meg
up for 35 (31) per month and no caps on usage. You'll really notice
the difference when you catch up in the UK.

One of your problems is going to be the wildly varying definitions of
"UNLIMITED" and "heavy use", both among ISPs and among users.
"bob" says he never gets throttled/capped at $ISP and "bob" says he
"hammers the bandwidth"; But "bob" might only do 10GB per month.
there is a niche for honest advertising / payment plans. You pay for low
contention, and then you pay per GB with no limits or capping. There's
no tech support (because people who use it know what they're doing) and
there's no extras, it is just connectivity. also, logging is minimal,
just conforming to UK law.
