A WEBSITE purporting to show pictures of James Bulger’s killer Jon
Venables as an adult appeared to have been shut down today.
The snaps, which were put up on other websites including social
network sites, were apparently taken before Venables’s re-arrest and
subsequent jailing on child porn charges last March.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said they could neither
"confirm nor deny" whether the pictures showed Venables.
It also reiterated the worldwide ban on the disclosure of any details
that could lead to the 28-year-old’s new life being compromised. It
was not clear whether the website had been explicitly shut down by the
Ministry of Justice.
In 2001 a judge granted Venables anonymity for life in an effort to
help him re-integrate back into society after spending much of his
childhood locked up for the appalling crimes of 1993.
The CCTV footage of 10-year-olds Venables and his accomplice Robert
Thompson taking two-year-old James by the hand in Bootle’s Strand
shopping centre seared themselves into the national consciousness.
The toddler’s mutilated body was found by a railway line in Walton two
days later.
News of Venables’s new identity being rumbled comes weeks before he
becomes eligible for parole on his child pornography sentence.
The ECHO cannot name the individual who published the pictures on his
website, or indeed the site itself, but it appears to be dedicated to
unmasking those who commit sex offences against children.
The online campaigner also included details of where Venables had
worked and details about places he had lived since his 2001 release,
in an apparent flagrant breach of the anonymity Venables was granted.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "We can neither confirm nor deny
whether the pictures on these websites are Jon Venables. We would
remind the press of the worldwide injunction in place which prevents
identification of Jon Venables."
Only last month Denise Fergus, James’s mother, called for Venables and
Thompson’s new identities to be revealed. When we contacted her
spokesman today she declined to comment further.
James’s father Ralph, 44, welcomed the news.
He said: "I've always said the public should know what Venables and
Thompson look like. The ban on identity is ungovernable and ridiculous
as millions have seen the photos and have access to the net."

A CITY man has defended his decision to publish photos he claims
expose the new identity of child killer Jon Venables.
Despite a life-long court ban on such material appearing, he claims he
has done nothing wrong.
The pictures, which are said to show 28-year-old Venables as an adult,
were published online last week, along with personal details.
Such information has specifically been banned to protect Venables'
secret ID – an order made following his 2001 release from jail on
licence.
The man, who the Echo cannot name for legal reasons, said the photos
had been viewed by one million people since they were published.
His website also cannot be named due to a gagging order protecting
Venables' identity.
The site was unavailable yesterday . It is not known whether it has
been removed by the internet provider.
Jon Venables was just 10 years old when he and Robert Thompson lured
James Bulger, aged two, from a Merseyside shopping mall before killing
the toddler in 1993.
The publication of the images comes weeks before Venables becomes
eligible for parole after being back behind bars for possessing
indecent images of children.
The pictures are said to be of Venables before his re-arrest last
year.
The Exeter man told the Echo he wanted to protect the "rights of
victims and survivors".
"I exposed Jon Venables last week, including pictures of him and the
story running up to when he got arrested for child pornography," he
said.
"I have had one million hits.
"I've spoken to the mother of James Bulger. Venables' parole hearing
is coming up soon and he could be released, meaning he will be back in
society.
"He will be paid by the Government and doesn't have to work.
"He is given everything to maintain a good standard of living – we
don't think this is right. He is a child murderer.
"I've had public reaction to the photos already – I've got a massive
following, it's been overwhelming.
"This isn't about Venables or offenders, it's about the rights of
survivors and victims."
He added: "There is no gagging order on me, I'm not the media.
"I'm not breaking any laws. The victim and survivor is always left at
court, whether or not they get a sentence that serves justice.
"There is very little support for them afterwards."
Relatives of James Bulger have welcomed the publication of the images.
A court order bans their identification for life, despite outrage that
families may be put at risk. A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police
said they were not investigating the publication of the images by an
Exeter man and had received no complaints from the public.

I would accept it and then attempt to verify its accuracy (e.g. timing,
reality, veracity, etc etc).
For instance, I recently used a photo, so as to stop some ASB in my area
...it was useful, because it was current ... as every minute passed, it
became less and less useful.

*I* certainly do not agree. How would having that image protect your
child? Even in the highly unlikely event that your child happened to
come into contact with Venables, nothing bad is at all likely to
happen. Venables must have come into contact with 1000's of children
since his release with no damage caused to any of them.
Knowing the identity of a single individual who killed a child when he
was himself a child, and who it appears might, in common with a great
many other men, have a penchant for homosexual child pornography is
something that is so unlikely to make any difference to the risk your
child faces as to be completely useless knowlege.
You child is in fact far more likely to be harmed in a road traffic
accident than almost any other cause. Do you therfore feel the need
to obtain images of cars in the belief that they will somehow protect
your child? And as for other people doing your child *deliberate*
harm - that is far more likely to come from your local teenage gangs
and your child's peer group at school than from a single convicted
criminal who lives nowhere near your location.

And what do you think is the probability of your neighbour being
Venables? It is so vanishingly small that it can be discounted.
besides, knowing that your neighbour is *not* a convicted child killer
may well give you a false sense of security.
If he *is* Venables, then I suggest that publishing his whereabouts
will place your child at *considerable* more risk than not knowing who
he is. A vigilante attack on his property is quite likely to damage
your property and the people in it.

You might also consider the fact that a public register is a valuable
source of information for the people on it. It allows them to get
together with each other rather than remaining generally isolated. Do
I need to explain how that will have the effect of increasing the risk
they pose?

The man who revealed the identity of Jamie Bulger killer Jon Venables
was unrepentant today – and said he was close to exposing his
accomplice Robert Thompson.

Photographs purporting to show Venables as an adult allegedly taken
before his re-arrest and subsequent jailing on child pornography
charges last year were widely circulated online.
They appeared alongside personal details, including information
specifically banned to protect Venables’ identity.
The photographs and information were published last week by an online
campaigner, who said he took the step to protect the public from the
convicted killer and paedophile.
Today the man, from Exeter, Devon, insisted he had done nothing wrong
and said he was ”closing in” on fellow killer Thompson.
The man, who cannot be identified, insisted he took the drastic step
to ”protect the rights of victims and survivors”.
He said: ”I exposed Jon Venables last week, including pictures of him
and the story running up to when he got arrested for child
pornography, which have led to over one million hits.
”I’m not done yet and, while I can’t say too much, will be revealing
the identity of Thompson in the next few days.
”I’ve not spoken directly to James’ mother Denise, although from what
I’ve been told the family are not averse to what I’m doing.
”I’ve spoken with the police about the website, and they are perfectly
happy and have told me there’s nothing they can do to shut it down.
”The court order bans media organisations from publishing anything but
I’m completely independent so can do as I please.”
Venables and Robert Thompson were just ten years old when they lured

The man behind the apparent identity breach added: ”He will be paid by
the Government and doesn’t have to work.

don’t think this is right. He is a child murderer.
”I’ve had public reaction to the photos already – I’ve got a massive
