I awoke this morning to hear none other than our old mate Baroness Young
blathering on about Section 28. I had half hoped she was in fact 145th
Viscountess Young of Stuffed Bottom or some such, and would have been
turfed out the other week. Alas, no.

I wonder what she got her peerage for? Life achievement in sticking her
nose into other folks' business, maybe? All one ever hears from her is
on the subject of homosexuality. It reminds me of a description I once
heard of Mary Whitehouse, "the porn expert". Maybe Pride Video could
consult Lady Young for their next skin flick- she could be their
depravity adviser. Nice.

I think she was originally concerned with local government. Did she
try for candidacy but was turned down, or was she actually a councillor
for a bit? Anyway, I believe that, in the modern Conservative terminology,
she gained her peerage as one of Ted Heath's cronies.

That might be because, as a member of the Lords, it is only on this
subject that she is reported. She was in Thatcher's cabinet and does
speak on other issues. She spoke opposing the passage of last session's
House of Lords Bill. I can't remember exactly what she said, but I think
it was veering in the Burfordish direction (but without the physical
exertion.) As far as I can work out, she does seem to be quite well
respected in the House of Lords. I think I heard that William Hague went
to seek her advice after the fiasco surrounding his dismissal of Robert
Cecil last year.

She certainly is good at politics and for all her views we could learn
from her how she works the system to her advantage.
