Second "Long Mu" Culture Festival to Be Held in June
The Second "Long Mu" Culture Festival will be held in Wuzhou
City, in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,
June 25-27, according to local officials.
Long Mu, also called the Dragon's Mother, was the Goddess of
Rain in ancient China. Chinese living in Guangxi, Guangdong
Province, and the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative
regions share a tradition marking Long Mu's birthday, asking for
her blessing for a good harvest.
During the festival, people from these areas will gather in
Wuzhou to attend festive activities, including fireworks shows
and evening parties, a traditional ceremony to mark the birthday
of the Goddess, symposiums, and trade and investment fairs.
The first such gala was held by the city last year. The local
government hopes that the annual festival will boost the city's
relations and cooperation with Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in
all fields.

Hungry Ghost Festival
It is said that Buddha heard Mu Lian's prayers and was touched
by Mu Lian's compassion. Thus Buddha decreed that once a year,
the gates of hell be opened so that the lost souls will be able
to roam the earth and be fed. This is why every year on the
seventh day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar, the
Chinese celebrate the festival of the hungry ghost. This is one
of five major festivals in the Chinese culture.
Food and drink will be offered at night outside the gates of
houses. This is so that the ghosts do not enter their houses and
cause trouble. A traditional food made for this festival is
steamed sweet bread. Lanterns are lit to help guide the ghosts
to the feasts set out for them. Special paper money is also
burned as offerings to these ghosts so that they can take it
back to hell and spend it there. To make sure that these souls
stay out of trouble, entertainment is set up round the clock,
mainly Chinese operas performed on outdoor stages.

Shown below is a side view of one of the 12 oil tanks housing 8
Marx modules, the VTL, disk line, and target chamber. The Marx
modules are arranged into groups of 4 forming what we call a
maintenance unit (MU). A MU will be removed for switch
maintenance and inspection on a rotating basis every % shots.

(I&S). The LPS shorts the MU output until just before firing.
Preliminary test of Atlas components have shown that a system
reliability of 95% should be achievable using the Ioad
protection switch to protect the bad from trigger prefires, This

voltage. Shots taken at lower voltage will improve this
reliabilityy number. Atlas is presently in the final design and
construction phase. Parts have been ordered for construction of
a "first article" consisting of a complete MU with its VTL and a

hydrodynamic and EOS experiments have been planned for Atlas in
