Saturday drink.

Poor turn out but we still had a laugh. Met Derek Jolly for the 1st
time, nice bloke as well.

Chris Jones played the dying swan trick and failed the meet leaving me,
Jimbo, Graham and Derek to prop up the bar so to speak.

Sunday..

Hmmmm The ECTS is skimpy this year, little or no 'freebies', lots of
obvious under 18's and as Jim Makin said to me during the show "its very
'console'".

Game wise some nice bits but will slap a better post re them after a
calm monday visit. Lots of things looked 'samey' is all I can say at the
mo.

Not nice to see EVERY DC game I saw was very bordered!!!

Roll on Monday and a soothing arse free day...

The NeoGeo looked good, also it looked like a number had been snaffed
up by fans; where there were machines held by a simple screw and bolt,
there was nothing by 4pm.

Was it just me, or were Sony not handing out very much? A reasonably
good double music CD and demo disc, but no mugs, tshirts,
lunch-boxes..

So what did you get? I got 3 tshirts (infogrammes, grandprix

Alien Brian bag and a pile of demo cds that I probably won't bother
looking at. Oh, and a rug-rats lucky bag. I might go back tomorrow

You need to track down one of the girls wandering about with the bag full of
various things but they're not exactly amazing stuff. On the bright side I
managed to get an Intel Bunnyman in blue, green and silver, they're better
quality than last years lot :]

My ECTS visit (SUNDAY ONLY)

Nintendo:-
I was very impressed with the nintendo stand, they had all there big games
apart from "spaceworld titles" . Rare were in top form again with an
amazing Perfect Dark & Jet Force & DK64. Other titles on the nintendo stand
that impressed me where Rayman 2, graphically the best game at the show,
miles better than any dreamcast game, If playability is tuned this could be
a stormer of a game. Also Ready to Rumble a very good N64 version. I just
got the impression that Nintendo where showing everything just to make up
for one last Big Xmas.

Playstation:-
An overkill of Sequel Mania with Wipeout 3, FF8, Gran Turisimo 2, Spryo
the Dragon 2, Track & Field 2 , Ace Combat 3 e.t.c.
There was nothing on the playstation that made me go WOW !! what a game GT2
was the same with new models. FF8 the same with life - size characters and
so on.
What really killed it for me was the playstation version of ready to
rumble, after playing the DC version which is amazing & the N64 version
which again was surprising I was just shocked by the blocky polygony type
graphics of the psx version. This was what I would call the wake - up call
for me to possibly retire my playstation & jump the next leap.

Dreamcast:-
The first game I played on entering the show, Trickstyle a futuristic
skateboarding title & the graphics & playability had me in awe & amazement.
Apart from that I had played all the other DC game's on a friends DC. I
would have liked to see Soul Caliber & maybe Shenume make an appearance but
to no avail.

Women & Freebies:
Women ahh what can I say it's heaven. Freebies not bad this year got 2
T-shirts, psx key ring, pen & badges, loads of demo discs. Some Audio Cd &
a photo with some Pokemon. The best a photo with a gorgeous blonde with
huge tit's I will scan & post to newsgroup.

Summary:-
Nintendo 64 came out showing everything, in fact I was so impressed by the
games on show that on the way home I picked up a US Nintendo 64 with
Goldeneye, Lylat Wars & Banjo Kazooie from CEX. I admit the machine has 2-3
games released a month but the quality of those games are amazing & with
the 4 meg ram card which by the way 85% of the n64 game's had running it
makes the graphics on par with a DC. I just can't wait for Perfect Dark,
DK64, Ridge Racer, Jet Force, Shadowman, Mario Golf, Mario Party e.t.c. But
like I said above I feel this will be the last xmas for the N64. The
Playstation will keep kid's happy with load's of baby game's and all the
people who want sequels but nothing original of note. I was really
disappointed with the psx but on hindsight after 5 years It would have to
be something amazing to impress on old technology. I have decided to keep
the playstation for one reason only RPG'S. The Dreamcast graphically show
of it's power, I would recommend the DC to people who are bored with the
PSX & do not want to go to Nintendo or who are loaded. Myself I will wait
until Easter 2000. Overall I wasn't impressed with this show to last year,
but then last year was my first time at ECTS.

Award Time.

Best PSX Game: Jade Cocoon
Best N64 Game: Perfect Dark/Rayman 2
Best Dreamcast Game: Ready to Rumble/House of the Dead
Best Stand: Nintendo
Best Women: MCV News Girls (ummmmm)
Best Freebie: Sony Keyring,Demo & Music CD.

Until Next Year.

I'll say. Sony were being a bit tight fisted too. Nice pens and bags but
unless you were 7foot you didn't stand much chance of grabbing anything. I
did walk away with a Mental Wealth CD but that was all. PS2 technical videos
were impressive though.

And then there was the heat. My God it was bad this year. Air conditioning
went as far as two open doors.

Agreed. Only a few games stood out for me.

I had one major complaint about ECTS this year. Why can't any of the
exhibitors hook up their displays properly? You'd think with all the decent
Plasma screens, LCD panels, projectors and 32"+ TV's that someone would know
how to connect a SCART cable!

T-Shirts and bags were being given out but were extremely scarce and nowhere
near me to grab one.

A few demo cd's, magazines, but that was it. Couldn't be bothered this year

Perfect Dark was a bit jerky but I am sure that will improve before
release. Juicy Babes I thought there where loads the MCV Girls/Codemasters/
Acclaim are memories. I think next year I am will take a camera for some
snaps !!. Watch out for my scan image of a babe coming soon !!

That was a bit silly of them. We were playing them about the 5:30pm
time, and they all seemed to be there. Looks like they had a shed-
load of replacements...

Sod all really. Sat and played G-Police 2 for about 30 minutes, and
some Sony bints came round. Threw a PSX badge at me (cheers) and a
PSX bag at Derek (eh ?? what ??? wos-that-all-about-them ??). So it
looks like you got more, sitting and playing the games, and not
hanging around for freebies :-)

People thought the Sony area was hot, but compared to last year, it
was an ice-box. Yes, we did wander into the Virgin area, and 2
minutes later, crawled back out again. They must have set the stand
up over the boilers or something, as it was unbareable. Felt sorry
for the Virgin staff working in there all day :-( They win the
"Hottest stand of 1999".

One thing that's put me off of the idea of going to the ECTS is that
I'm convinced that I'll come out feeling totally self-concious and
completely ugly!

Might be a giggle one year, perhaps next year, see how it goes.
Could stay at my folks, and pop in via train.

The ECTS? It's held in at the Kensington Olympia, London. Catch a train to
Clapham Junction and there's a two stop connection from there. You'll end up
right outside the exhibition hall.

In fact, I PREFER games with borders.
With a wide screen TV, games which are 16:9 or 14:9 (or similar) will quite
happily run in almost full screen without looking out of proportion.

Full screen 4:3 software for a 'normal' telly (i.e. no borders), only looks
right
in 4:3 mode (with vertical borders), I can't use the extra bit of screen I
paid for.

Even Brookside has borders these days. Have a look if you don't believe me.

You're kidding! I've never known anybody to dislike the stick on the NGPC.
It's great - it's microswitched and is wonderful for playing fighting games.
I find it far better than any pad I've used on a console.

Gotta agree with you there James.........definitely far better than
the Gameboy. Metal Slug and the Tennis that I tried it on, both played
a treat.

Definitely will consider the NGPC if the games base is a bit more
varied than the Console was........one can only stand so many Beat Em
ups. :-)

Nah, don't be silly...Lots of shapes, sizes and features there.
Everyone too busy playing or looking at what's on offer to care what
others look like..

The bods on the stands are OTT, either Arnie types or painted big
chested women...ie not real everyday folk :)

What was nice was seeing a couple of wheel chair bound folk getting
prime treatment on the stands.

That's what they did today (monday). I asked one of the bints and she
kindly informed me of the way it worked (freebies for those playing) and
also she followed me round till I found a seat and gave me a bag (had
one already) then she found us again and handed over a mug and a key
ring to split between me and Jimbo.

Maybe I'll be bothered to go next year...

My press pass got me a double album and demo PSX CD, nice, and three
press cds in pink, white and orange cases. Oh, and a big magazine.

Anyone else notice - no references anywhere to the pocket station? I'm
going to ask about that tomorrow....

Why?...The borders serve in most cases to show that it's a shite
conversion that's going to slow down at some point and certainly isn't
anywhere near as good as th NTSC version speed wise.

How it looks on screen ie fitting on the screen is the last thing you
should worry about in games.

>Even Brookside has borders these days. Have a look if you don't believe me.

Yes it is, but for a different reason, Brookie is done that way for
widescreen viewing. C4 show most programs is widescreen or as near as..

Saves the task of doing any Pan and scan crap for the TV viewers..

It's terrible for anything that requires predominantly four-directional
movement, though. Luckily, if you buy Pac-Man, you get a funny little
rubber-ring thing that fits over the pad into one of those little grooves
round the side and improves things greatly by making the diagonals hard to
get. Nice to know SNK were aware of the problems, but how come the ring
didn't come with the machine?

Definitely. I had a little go on it yesterday. I love that little

Same here. I wasn't really bothered about freebies, but I did get
a Sony demo disc yesterday, and one of those Playstation shoulder
bags that the girls were wandering around with in the Sony stand on
Sunday.

Great, wasn't it? The girl asked me if I wanted a badge, I said no

I got the 3 press CD's, a big velcro-ed book with the

the press CD's are PC discs, so I haven't looked at them

Did you see the scramble to get spare Sony party tickets at about 5:30
yesterday? That was comical and slightly scary at the same time. There
were so many people crowding the desk behind the video wall that one of the
people at the desk had to stand on it and ask everyone to take two steps
back - the desk was getting pushed back towards them. One Sony guy took a
bunch of tickets and moved away from the desk to give them out, and ended up
losing his rag with the crowd, calling them a 'bunch of animals'.

All that fuss over Faithless, free beer, vodka and food, shared with 4500
other people.

Fave games for me were Toy Story 2, Super Smash Bros and Gauntlet Legends.
Hang on, that's two N64 games and one PlayStation game.... that can't be
right? To be honest, I'd played or seen most of the PS games before.
Overall, there wasn't really much of interest at the show, quite
disappointing. I wanted to play some more of 40 Winks this time, but every
time I saw it it had a horrific bug where all the textures had turned black.

So who saw the MediEvil 2 video on the big screen?

Supply problems, the PR girl from Sony told me today. Basically they
can't mee the Jap demand for them so they've canned the release
anywhere else until it slows down.

On the bright side, asking this question gave me then the opportunity
to ask her to get me one of those nice shoulder bags, but not the
really nice Wip3out ones...

Myself and Jimbo left about 4pm as it was starting to slow down in
there. Although I like my freebies i'm not really into the mass 'bundle'
to get them, it got rather silly after a while and you only had to look
at the manic faces of the 'cattle' around the give away stands.

Re the tickets, I thought they had learnt their lesson with the freebie
crowd, seems not!

I spoke to a guy local to me who went all three days *purely* to get
goodies, he was rushing back on the tuesday to try and get a missing
colour key fob from the Sony stand. He already got 5 bags etc etc etc
but this keychain thing was like the end of the world to him...

Its sad, he is about my age as well plus he could hardly tell you what
any of the games were about..Bloomin sad...

I liked Space shooter on the PSX, Pac Man looked real nice but everyone
seemed to be playing follow the leader in game styles...

Didn't see anything 'new and exciting' but most things were of good
quality. Want to find out who thought of 'Stinky Beaver' as a game name

After putting up with 14" portables for the last 15 yrs or so, I like
my games BIG screen. I find that unless I have had experience of the
NTSC version, the slowdown isn't really noticable enough in the PAL
version to spoil the game. (The exception of course being beat'm ups).
Full speed would be nice, but I'm happy to trade this off in most
cases for a bigger game screen.

>How it looks on screen ie fitting on the screen is the last thing you
>should worry about in games.

I wouldn't say I worry about it, but like I said, if I can play with a
bigger picture, in proportion, on my wide screen, on a game that would
otherwise have borders on a square telly, then that's great.

Brookie has borders which are removed when viewed on a wide TV. This
enhances viewing pleasure for those with wide screens, but is a minor
annoyance to 4:3 tv owners, because they're stuck with the borders.

Some PAL conversions have borders which are removed when viewed on a
wide TV. This enhances gaming pleasure for those with wide screens,
but is a minor annoyance to 4:3 tv owners, because they're stuck with
the borders.

Same thing innit?

I prefer t.v. programmes in widescreen, same with my PlayStation.

Slowdown is noticeable in EVERY game, man. I was playing Super Mario Bros.
on my NES this afternoon... It's so much frustratingly slower compared to
the game you can play through an emulator or Super Mario Deluxe on GameBoy
Colour(sic). It's also the same with Metal Gear's PAL release...

Yes, its an anamorphic(sp) picture..it stretches to correctly fit the
16:9

Ish....

If a PAL release plays without borders on a WS TV then its most likely
being 'zoomed', ie the picture is being made to fit the screen as a
whole picture BUT unlike anamorphic DVD films the picture is not
correctly viewed, DVD's that are anamorphic do not have quality loss
when zoomed to fit.

Can't answer 100% as I don't have a WS TV.. :(

Indeed, borders=smaller on a 4:3 display, but on widescreen tv, press
the 16:9 button and as if by magic the borders disappear and the
picture fills the screen.

Maybe I need to clarify this. I said I prefer games with borders, but
I don't like the borders themselves. A bordered game will not have
borders in a wide mode on my tv, but will fill the screen vertically.
To get the same screen area with a non bordered game would mean that I
lose a strip of picture top and bottom. So a non bordered game in 4:3
will play physically narrower than a bordered game in 14:9 or 16:9.
Maybe you need to see this to appreciate what I am saying.

Anamorphic..... Bloody hell, no need to show off. I think it does
'zoom' in to the non-bordered area, rather than anamorphicise it. (I
made that word up). So there is a quality loss, esp. on 16:9, which
shows itself in the form of horizontal blank lines, don't know the
technical term for them. Generally 14:9 does the trick and the lines
are not apparent enough to spoil the appearance of the game.

They had 2 people walking around in great big round outfits that were
supposed to be POKEMON characters from the Nintendo stand. Jimbo
thought they were so nice he had his photo taken with them twice..

He then spent every five mins saying how good the photo's were..

Stuff about Sony, their games etc some nice artwork of the games and even
pictures of the cases for the games (PSX, controllers, bags etc), nothing
exciting but useful if you want to write up on them (or something).

That's not a proper 16:9 then, it should display the borders and all unless
you're talking about a zoom mode which then probably cuts off some of the image
or distorts it even if only very slightly.

You're looking at this the wrong way, it's not too far off from putting
curtains on the sides or top to hide borders :] It's proper 4:3 AND anamorphic

If it was an anamorphic mode the image would appear very 'squished', the
problem with zooming on a PSX game is it has a habit of showing up all the
problems but it'd be useful if you're quite a distance from the TV. If the
game has a 16:9 anamorphic mode Widescreen owners get a great image on their
sets and it has a 4:3 mode normal TVs get a proper image, of course seeing as
most companies can't be bothered to do away with borders what hope is there for
both modes in most games anytime soon?

So he wasn't on about a train or mining-cart level then ? :-)

You should get the staff on training courses, like sending them to
Donnington Rock Festival and telling them to get to the front :-)

Missed the Gauntlet Legends.

I think "Scantly-Clad Women" work better than "The Bug-Eyed Monster".
Bit disturbing those piccies as you walk into the Sony area :-) I
can't believe you've found someone so deformed, or is this showing off
the real-time rendering power of the PSX2 ? :-)

>So who saw the MediEvil 2 video on the big screen?

Saw a bit of it. Any idea when we will be getting a sniff of it ?

Also noticed a guy with a "Paradroid" T-Shirt. He was hanging around
WO3, and didn't have a badge showing. Was he part of your crew, and
is this a hint at a forth-coming re-make ? :-)

Yep, the DVD groups are livid if a release isn't anamorphic these days..

Since I don't have a WS tv I don't really mind but its fair to say that
they do :)

Did anybody see the new game from the company who made the game
HUGO ??? Had a little snigger when I saw the name of it.

Called Stinky & Beaver, but a quick glimpse at the display made me
see other things !!! :))

Well, the levels in the original were predominantly composed of thin
strips of level joined at certain points.

Actually, I'm just being bloody picky.

Nope, I mean restrictive paths instead of completely open areas.

Well, Paul (and I'm shocked that you could ask such a dumb question),
I'd like you to compare these two geographical features:

(1) A road. Typically about 10 meters across or so.
(2) A field. Much larger. Offers more possibilities for freedom of
movement.

Alternatively, you can compare Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot. Nuff
said.

Well smuck features...Since when did Medievil have path sized playing
arena's?...Area's describes them correctly....

You can't have it both way's..

My reply was based on your pedantic reply, just because after you
stumbled out of the bar on sat via Old Compton St you ended up with an
'area' sized hole in your botty!
